This crap again?

So I'm sitting here finishing my dinner and watching Rome - Engineering an Empire on History Channel 2.

Happily, Xians were only mentioned briefly and once - about those Extreme Games that Nero was nice enough to hold for them in the amphitheatre. Oh, and the alleged big BBQ.

But just wait! Saturday night H2 is running a new show, "Proving God."

Judging by the pullquotes in the ad, it's going to be the same old tiresome crap:

"Einstein said the laws of physics revealed the mind of God!"

I really love this one:

"If there was a Big Bang, there must have been a Big Banger!"

Bend over!

Nothing in the world would have persuaded me to watch god crap on the History channel. I'd have taken one look at the title and kept going down the line on the remote.

Besides, "The Cotton Club" is on Ovation right now. It wasn't that great a movie and the plot was less than wonderful, but the performances were stellar, especially Gregory Hines.

10. Correction! I did NOT watch the "god crap."

It doesn't come on until this Saturday, 8/4.

I was watching Rome - Engineering an Empire, which is a good show (I'd seen it before). Starts with Julius Caesar building a bridge across the Rhine. Ends with the fall of the Empire and destruction of its engineering treasures, like the Aqueducts.

Wonderfully free of woo and god-crap. Peter Weller pops up to note that ancient Romans had running water, something Europe wouldn't see again for 1000 years. What happened in that millenium is left unstated. Heh...

It was only the commercials for "Proving God" kept coming on and visually/verbally assaulting me.

It's probably churlish to complain about something I don't intend to watch. But as mentioned, the hoopla tells me all I need to know about it. One more round of special pleading and garbled quantum flapdoodle.

But! How about a SPECIAL BONUS from Fake History Channel...one that combines woo AND god-crap?

An upcoming episode of Ancient Aliens will cover that very subject. Apparently aliens planted evidence of the Xian and Muslim god. I may watch it, if I'm drunk.

11. OK, didn't mean to insult you

but you have to admit some of your other viewing had me suspicious that you had watched it.

I do like "Engineering an Empire" and seeing all the solutions Rome found to the problems inherent in crowded cities over a thousand years before the same thing occurred to the rest of us in northern Europe.

For some odd reason, I was impressed by the row of stone toilet seats at the Baths, running water in a trench carrying away the waste and down into the sewers.

However, there is no earthly way I could watch "Ancient Aliens." My foot would be through the screen and I can't afford a new set. Just a glimpse of those idiots running around in green light while they breathlessly describe..uh..nothing much in the promos is enough for me. Thank goodness the promos are short ones.

I caught that accidentally once. Within 5 minutes it had come up with the stupidest, most illogical crap ever. I remember something about an ancient grid of holes (something an ancient civilization could NEVER do!) and if you connected them is a certain way,(you can connect them any way you want!) they formed Pythagorean triangles 1000s of years BEFORE PYTHAGORAS! (As if a Pythagorean triangle couldn't even exist before Pythagoras gave it his name!)

4. Einstein claptrap yet again.
Thu Aug 2, 2012, 12:23 AM

Christians love to quote him because he often spoke of "god" (small "g&quot . But he was neither a theist, nor what one call an atheist. Unfortunately for the kookie theist who quote Einstein, he spoke often of his religious beliefs. Most specifically he stated in no uncertain terms that he did not believe in any personal god, one that had any interaction with humans.

Einstein described his god as Spinoza's god. He was a pantheist, who used the language of god as a place holder, and only such, for that which humankind might not yet understand. God, to Einstein, means nothing about a higher intelligence, but a higher order of nature, to which humans may be inspired to know.

I hate it whenever Christians (usually them, but other theists, too) misquote old Albert like this.

By today's standards he would be considered an atheist, although he might not use that word.

Thanks for the post.

What do you expect?

It's ratings. And conflict and controversy are good for ratings.

Apparently, Bigfot is actually an ancient alien, perhaps even a half space-angel/human hybrid. My wife kept shouting, "It was a BEAR that you saw. A fucking BEAR! What's wrong with you people?"

Funnier than most sitcoms. Hilarious, even.

14. If you haven't seen it, try to catch NatGeo's "The Truth Behind..."
Fri Aug 3, 2012, 01:56 PM
Aug 2012

The woos actually did a write-in campaign to National Geographic, complaining that the show was too skeptical.

The usual format - for the first 20 minutes to half-hour, the show let the True Believers run wild and make their outrageous claims. Then they brought in real scientists, researchers etc. and just demolished all the BS.

It was a beautiful thing to see.

The show had a Bigfoot episode, but it mostly concentrated on debunking the notorious Bigfoot video from the 1970s. That was the "female Bigfoot," complete with Bigboobs.

Sometimes on weekends, NatGeo runs marathons of all the old episodes.

and they know it. Those are the people who are sitting around watching their station, so they are giving them what they want.

If Einstein were alive, I am sure that these same people would be condemning him...and they still would now if they ever really paid attention to what he said instead of pulling a part of a quote out here and there. But then again, they would condemn Jesus if he were here today too.

I can only shake my head.

17. Isn't that the station that routinely features programming about armageddon and the antichrist?

I had gotten that impression anyway, and I might breeze past there on the guide now and then, but I rarely see anything worth watching. Nazis and aliens, antichrist crap (which I actually enjoy if used in entertainment)... they seem to have decided against serious programming years and years ago.
