Foliage season underway in Mid-Atlantic as colorful scenes blanket mountains.

'East of the Blue Ridge it’s still mainly green, but color levels are rising.

As nights grow long, the greenery of summer is giving way to the fiery colors of autumn.

So far, most of the Washington area is seeing sporadic and patchy color locally. The transformation is further along west of the District, and many trees are showing off their best.

The broader D.C. region is blessed by considerable diversity of plant life and landscape. Within a few hours’ drive of the city, one can swim in the ocean or climb above the tree line in mountainous terrain. This range makes for a long and varied fall season. It’ll be about two months before it wraps up.

Most of the area is still bathed in green, according to the Foliage Report, which aggregates reports of fall color across the country. Moderate color continues to spread to the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge. The most elevated portions of the Mid-Atlantic — from Western Maryland south into the mountain peaks of West Virginia — are seeing high color or near peak color.'>>>

Everything above 5000ft is peaking right now. I just had to drive down into SE Idaho and back this week, 550 miles round trip, and it was spectacularly beautiful because the way the sun was located the leaves were all back lit making the colors more vivid on the trip out. It was overcast on the way back and it was nearly as nice as the way down. It will all be gone by next week.

We don't have as many colorful varieties but they do cover the color palette.

When I got down around 4700ft things were just getting going.
