Woman gets $3.2M utility bill from Rapid City

Jackie Nettleton almost needed to win the lottery to pay her Rapid City utility bill this month.

When she opened the bill up on Friday, the amount due read $3,204,716.

That's roughly $3,204,640 more than what she usually pays each month at her 1,000-square-foot rental property on Willow Avenue.

"I had to put on my glasses and reread it, "Nettleton said. "I thought, oh my gosh, how could this be."

I pay most bills online, but I do it on my schedule. No automatic payments here.

My cell phone provider in particular always pushes the automatic payment. They market it as "letting you take control" of your payments.

However, after moving and keeping the old account open for a few extra months I realized that it took so much effort to close the automatic payments that wasn't worth the effort.

As far as paying online is concerned, I use a re-loadable prepaid debit card to limit my expsoure in case I lose the card or it is compromised in some manner.
