Rapid City legislator says U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson threatened her political future
A Rapid City state legislator is accusing U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson of "ambushing" her this weekend with the intention of deterring her from seeking higher office next year, but Johnson said he was just trying to help.
Republican Rep. Scyller Borglum is alleging that her recent actions as a legislator have caused the "South Dakota Republican establishment" to question her political motives. Since wrapping up her first session in Pierre earlier this year, Borglum has announced that she's starting a "rural education initiative" and has been traveling around the state for a listening tour about gaps in education access, as well as hiring a media spokeswoman.
"I haven't confirmed or announced any run for higher office," she said. "I'm not even thinking that far in advance."
Borglum sent out a news release on Monday, followed by a Facebook video on Tuesday, about a "DC-style ambush" at the Lawrence County Lincoln Day dinner on Saturday in which Johnson questioned whether she was preparing to challenge U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds to be the Republican candidate for Senate next year.
