My father (obviously like myself English) had a family of patients of Chinese origin, this was in Manchester England. The grandparents had come over as refugees and had been settled in Wales. Their children had been brought up and spoke their dialect of Chinese (apparently) with a Welsh accent, of course marrying within their community. This couple, the parents moved to Manchester to open a Chinese restaurant, had children who grew up speaking Chinese with a Mancunian accent.

Grandparents and grandchildren could not understand each other in their cultural tongue a fact my Dad found out when one of the granddaughters was came in with a problem accompanied by grandmother as a chaperone. The mutual incomprehension was annoying to both generations of the family, especially as their only common tongue was English.
