In Kyoto, foreign couples tying the knot in Shinto rites in English

KYOTO--It was just another traditional wedding ceremony at a famous Shinto shrine in Kyoto except for one odd thing--the priest was speaking in English.

"Please remain bowed slightly," murmured 43-year-old priest Mitsutaka Inui to an American couple at Kamigamojinja shrine in late April.

"Please clap your hands," Inui added as he guided them carefully through the ancient rituals of a religion that has thrived for centuries exclusively in Japan.

Inui conducted the entire silver-wedding rite in English, from the sipping of sake at the start to the presenting of cleyera tree leaves as an offering.
