I witnessed this very often in Thailand when I lived there.

There was the story of a woman who was in her 70s who sold her noodle shop and put all of the money into a paper bag got on bus and went to the Mayor of Bangkok and gave it to him (it was about$ 300,000) to give to the poor (the mayor was an ascetic who lived in a house with no walls and owned no valuable possessions) or help in the treatment of abandoned animals.

her children were all grown and were professionals doing well and she could live modestly on the savings that she kept.
