MALMOE: The Secret Mission (2019) 말모이 Movie Trailer
Really enjoyed this movie. This is only a short trailer. Unfortunately the full movie is behind a paywall at viki.com. Malmoi means collection of words. As I understand, it is the indigenously produced Korean dictionary. The plot is fictional but partly based on historical events. The movie is about some scholars, school teachers, and ordinary Koreans who work in the Korean Language Society during the Japanese occupation. It has English subs. One of the main characters is a common thief who has to learn how to read and finds his true purpose. I enjoyed some of the presentations on how different dialects treat particular common Korean words. I realize this film is not for everyone, maybe history buffs, Korean language enthusiasts, etc. But if you see poor ratings don't believe them.
