2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow would Hillary provide health care coverage to the homeless?
The most vulnerable among us are the ones who need health care coverage the most.
If someone has no home, no mailing address, no identification.... How does she get any coverage to them, even Medicaid?
Aren't these people doomed to forever be given minimal care at an emergency room and then kicked out again to fend for themselves? Is some poorly funded free clinic the best anyone could ever possibly hope for them? Are not some of these people (not all) the ones who are most in need of mental health care?
If you are reading this knowing that they won't be covered under her plan, then you should not be able to support it. That is not what our party is about. Only universal, single payer coverage can help these people.
Admit it.

I guess we should then ask how she plans on paying for all those new prisoners. Higher Taxes?

(3,580 posts)There has to be a change in the infrastructure of healthcare delivery in order to accommodate the homeless. Single payer alone will not guarantee healthcare for all, it will guarantee the bill gets paid.
Many of my patients are homeless. It's very hard to keep up with them. One is the reasons is there are so little services for all of them.
I'm not against single payer but it is part of a larger solution to providing healthcare.

(22,308 posts)Couldn't you simply treat them and submit the bill to the same place you submit all other bills? Maybe I am ignorant, but isn't that the whole idea behind a single payer system?
I think the real issue here would be how to avoid fraud. Off the top of my head I would suggest some biometric system be used for all billing. A simple hand print should be enough.

(3,580 posts)Single payer would pay the bill but it does not deliver care. Low income and poor who need single payer already live in poorly served areas. The stupidest thing happens in my line of work. I'll see a suicidal patient who on their own can't get an appointment with a psychiatrist for 3 months yet if they finally are at nearly at the end of their rope literally, they can see one if they come to the er and get admitted. There are not enough outpatient services. No matter what kind of insurance they have and God help you if you have no insurance.
My vision for single payer is a total overhaul of how we provide care to everyone.
