Ageism (also spelled "agism" is stereotyping and discriminating against individuals or groups on the basis of their age. This may be casual or systematic. The term was coined in 1969 by Robert Neil Butler to describe discrimination against seniors, and patterned on sexism and racism.

(10,175 posts)Younger demographic?
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I will submit she struggles among that demographic. However that doesn't obviate the fact a number of posters have used agesist epithets which are inherently illiberal, ergo:
"Yep, just add a few more wheelchairs and some O2 tanks and it's there."

Shouldn't we liberals refrain from prejudices regardless of the target?

But, all that aside. I will be nicer next time.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I can go along with the fact she is extremely popular amongst the same demographic that likes FOX News
But I will be nicer next time.
Katashi_itto
Is that a tacit admission that you agree with me that trafficking in ageist stereotypes is illiberal and you will refrain from doing so, at least on an ostensibly liberal board?
And can you please provide a citation for your assertion that "she is extremely popular amongst the same demographic that likes FOX News" ?
Thank you in advance.

(360 posts)Let us know when he starts drawing thousands of people to one Clinton event. But we all know it's not gonna happen.
This picture was likely taken from the back of the crowd to show the most people possible. If it was a full gym they would have taken it from the very back to show that fact. So there is roughly 50-100 people in the picture. Now if we triple that number we can get an estimate for the event attendance of 150-300 people in attendance.
Bernie Sanders drew 7,000+ in Alabama on a cold winter night, which is supposedly a Clinton stronghold.
Hillary Clinton has a numbers problem, and has had it since her very first campaign events; only 5,000 people in an event held in New York! Come on. If she drew as many people as Bernie Sanders, even once, they would have spread the news over every single publication out there.

(30,247 posts)one candidate. The personal attacks against Hillary are disgusting. That's the problem with dogmatic people. I have lived in countries where only one opinion was accepted. It's not a good way to live, whether that repression comes from the Right or the Left. Good manners and class were never a strong point here, but they have now definitely left the house.
Never mind, in the long run, our candidate will prevail.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)All I will say is believing you and only you have a monopoly on truth and everybody else is wrong and needs to be corrected betrays an authoritarian impulse , and is invariably a catalyst for very bad things to happen.
Beacool
(30,247 posts)They believe they have the truth and that other opinions are not valid. It's the same dogmatic all or nothing perception of politics that on the Right permeates the Tea Party crowd. IMO, some here have the same mindset, but on the Left of the political spectrum. That why I have repeated ad nauseam that DU is a mirror image of Free Republic. Neither represent the mainstream of their respective political parties. When all is said and done, neither extreme will prevail.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,710 posts)I don't want any more hides and actually those who abuse the alert mechanism are fully aware they are quelling dissent...
All I will say is I know there are a lot of people who think differently from me and that is their right. I have neither the inclination nor the energy to browbeat them into conforming to my world view.
