- Michael Render (Killer Mike) and Sen. Bernie Sanders walk in Atlanta where the candidate held a large rally in 2015 -
By Matt Miller, Jan. 20, 2016
On Tuesday, celebrated writer Ta-Nehisi Coates published an article in The Atlantic in which he decried Bernie Sanders for being against "reparations for slavery." In 2014, Coates published a landmark cover story in The Atlantic, "The Case for Reparations." In this week's piece Coates argued that: Unfortunately, Sanders's radicalism has failed in the ancient fight against white supremacy. What he proposes in lieu of reparationsjob creation, investment in cities, and free higher educationis well within the Overton window, and his platform on race echoes Democratic orthodoxy.
Today, rapper and political activist Killer Mikewho has endorsed Sanders in one-on-one interviews, and appearances on Colbertfired back at Coates, defending Sanders' policy.
>Killer Mike's (Mike Render's) comments on Twitter, Jan. 20, 2016:
"I love the writings of @tanehisicoates. I am very curious why every one thinks his critique of Sanders of some kind of death nail".
-"Our current POTUS has NOT been asked about Reparations and he is black. lol".
"If I as a working class African American read and hear Sanders platform. Better pay, end of drug wars, fixing Youth unemployment and more. - "Like continuing to free those folks whom mandatory minimums had essentially given life in jail."
"The truth of my support is I am pro Reparations for any people used and abused like Blacks have been here and other places."
*"Candidate that I think would be more sensitive to the very accomplishable goal, and the other things that can/will help black people is SANDERS."
*"THE FACT THAT BLACKS EVEN HAVE TO JUSTIFY THE CASE FOR REPARATIONS IS SHAMEFUL."
*"THE FACT THAT ONLY ONE CANDIDATE IS BEING CALLED TO TASK IS- BULLSHIT."
"ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT CANDIDATE IS THE ONLY ONE WITH POLICY PROPOSAL THAT DIRECTLY EFFECTS THE BLACK COMMUNITY IF ELECTED."

- Killer Mike has a deep interest in politics as reflected in his music. He introduced Sen. Sanders at the 2016 campaign's successful rally in Atlanta and also met with Bernie to discuss major topics: mass incarceration, declassifying marijuana, single-payer healthcare, eliminating income inequality, and issues of social justice which Mike learned growing up in Atlanta, the town so closely associated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young and other civil rights legends.

The main issue is that slavery was legal before 1865, so there is no legal standing for descendants. Any form of slavery afterwards could be rewarded a settlement by those who directly perpetrated it, as it would have been illegal. The problem is whether those entities are still in existence or not. But, some are not interested in legal fact.
What we should focus on is institutional racism and income disparity. But, again, if a settlement is something that is sought, it needs to be proven on a case by case basis. And seeing how the American society slowly evolved since 1865, and the setbacks to the African Americans brought on by Booker T. Washington (note: I am a fan of W. E. B. DuBois), this will be difficult to prove. This is akin to how the Jews, Asians and others were quarantined to sections of cities, withheld from banking and various industry.
The only way we will see correction is not by some passive and slow political progress, but by an institutional disruption.
If someone want's slow correction to these institutional norms, it might take another hundred years.

(41,113 posts)- Ta-Nehisi Coates Attacks Sanders on Reparations - The Benjamin Dixon Show.
The Benjamin Dixon Show host shares his perspectives on the recent article by black intellectual Ta-Nehisi Coates that attacks Sen. Bernie Sanders on the subject of Reparations for Slaveyr, but not other Democratic presidential candidates.
Dixon notes that Coates article in The Atlantic was written just after Paul KRUGMAN'S piece that Sen. Sanders plan for single-payer healthcare is too difficult. Dixon discusses the issues at length and states,
"I'M SICK AND TIRED OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY MAKING BERNIE SANDERS JUMP THROUGH HOOPS".

And the opinions you expressed are uninformed and ignorant. Widely known and respected, Mike's quite an intelligent, inquisitive person and a talented musician and activist. The rude, offensive remarks, such as 'isn't smart enough' you made are an embarrassment, to you, as you know. And they have no place on this forum.

Killer Mike impresses the hell out of me, his grasp of issues is fantastic. I would love to see him in politics.

(41,113 posts)People are bright, not to be underestimated or thought fools. False manoeuvers can de detected fairly quickly and called out for what they are, obviously. That Mike picked up on this fracas straight up is no surprise. He has good political instincts, high intelligence, is talented and a powerful, motivating speaker who has a Lot going for him. Already an activist, Mike Render would make a dynamic politician I agree.

Have you got quotes from them? You invoke the names of these people as if you think they would disagree with Coates and speak from authority on the subject. Prove what you claim.

(27,310 posts)And so does Hillary. But only Bernie is taken to task?
Where was Coates when Obama so it wasn't going to happen. Where was Coates when Hillary said it wasn't going to happen.
