Phew. Brought tears to my eyes..... SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. Aides said the spot will start airing Friday in both of the first two nominating states. BTW, go to the YouTube site and read the comments after the video. So exciting!
ON EDIT: If you loved it as much as I did, please consider going to Bernie's Facebook page and let Bernie and his campaign know how much we loved this ad. IMHO, it is so powerful that it needs to be broadly disseminated!!! I left a comment under the ad, which is posted on Facebook. Go to:

(22,308 posts)I thought it was about all the people turning out at his events, aka his supporters.
They/we are the ones looking for America.
The ad is hitting home because it is not about him, it is about us. Just like his campaign and his vision for how he would govern.
A beautifully done ad. I am not sure that other campaigns would even think to take that approach.

(57,349 posts)The crowds who line up in the freezing cold to see Bernie are looking for America too but that song always reminds me of immigrants.

(22,308 posts)That is the difference.
I am from Detroit and after high school I took a bus out to Colorado to look for work (during the first Reagan recession).
That song always reminds me of that bus trip.

* ... and, actually, as I hollered back at our Battery Sergeant-Major, as I was making my way to the piggery, after he called out to me jestingly from the parade-ground, one bright sunny morning; much to the mirth of my comrades on parade, being put through their paces.
He was an old Jock (as in Scotsman), all of forty, and I could do no wrong in his eyes, after I put up on Battery Orders : 'Perspective 1 pt e.w.' I used to phone bets on from Germany. Invariably lost. Sorry. I don't mean to make this my life-history. Must press on. But I reiterate my greeting, Chiz.
It highlights the stark differences in opinion between Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump as to what it is that makes America Great. I agree with Bernie's vision.

The percentage among Democrats in Iowa is even lower.
Secondly, this ad is posted on his Facebook page and other social media outlets for all to see, not just Iowans.

(6,335 posts)and I support Bernie 100%. Nonetheless, even if this IS an "Iowa" ad there absolutely should have been more diversity in the individuals/families highlighted at beginning of ad. The crowd scenes are more diverse, but they flash past faster and the impression remains. I am surprised, to be honest. None of which impacts my 100% support for Bernie at all - he will work to make life better for ALL of us and his history shows he is well aware of the impact of racism and discrimination in this country and he stands against it - most emphatically. But image matters a LOT right now.

(62 posts)I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that. Every single person/family highlighted in the beginning are white. You only saw diversity in the crowd shots and very briefly. Then there is a close-up of a white dad holding his white daughter while "I've come to look for America" plays in the background. It honestly seems more aligned to an ad a Republican with his/her "we've got to bring America back" mantra (with hidden meanings of "more whites" . I know it wasn't meant that way, but if I were a person of color watching this it might bother me.
I think the ad needs to be redone with more diversity too, especially with the choice of background music.
JimDandy
(7,318 posts)Maybe hispanic? Plenty of POC in the video. Including more might have looked like pandering, especially when the target market is Iowa, a 90+% white state.
Quixote1818
(28,918 posts)The images that stuck with me were of the black lady he was hugging and the black girl high fiving everyone. One guy he was shaking hands with looked Asian. There was plenty of diversity as far as race but perhaps a lot of the folks looked a bit too Hipster, even the farmers looked kind of like hippies doing it on the side rather than as a living. Beyond that I think it is an extremely effective ad.

Your comment is quite measured, but some of the following posts on the same theme seem to be trolllike - trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
snpsmom
(672 posts)Of course the music is great, and images of farmers hit a note that resonates with many in Iowa, but to me it lacks any substance. Just showing people, and then showing Bernie and Jane, especially when the vast majority of those people are white and he's being hit by his opponent for all-white crowds, doesn't seem like much of a message (inspiring or otherwise). Maybe I'm just missing it.

Great musicians transcend generations unlike the pop that is so specific to one or the other.

"America" is a protest song that "creates a cinematic vista that tells of the singer's search for a literal and physical America that seems to have disappeared, along with the countrys beauty and ideals."[4]

I was sitting in bed and watching Hillary's new one that kind of promotes fear and toughness and I said now you should see Bernie's figuring he would roll his eyes as per normal and roll over.
I played it and said nothing, it was my third time to watch. After he was quiet, and with teas in his eyes said that is the best political ad I have ever seen, if Bernie plays only that and not to many times he will win.
He doesn't say stuff like that, he usually is angry and thinks our country is a mess that can't be fixed.
There are many like him especially in the poorer areas, while canvassing this weekend in rural Carson City in this one poor neighborhood with old trailers I talked to a lot of angry people, I guess you could say because of my hubby I am used to this view.

That is my take on it. A refreshing glimpse into a campaign that is not going to launch attacks, but inspire anew. In a targeted market ad, I think in 60 seconds that is a pretty big scope of variety, given that if this were an ad directed at Mississippi, or Texas, or New Mexico, it's flavor would shift accordingly.

(7,318 posts)The Sanders issue ads have been Berning up the airwaves in IA and NH for weeks already. Now is the time to run ads like this that make people feel good about themselves, their lifestyle, and their choice of candidate, while at the same time showing them that others feel that way too about the candidate. That type of ad MUST be genuine in order to pull it off. This one is just that kind of ad.
It shows hope and real change is coming without ever needing to say those words. The Joy and Excitement is palpable. That is what you must have to 'seal the deal' and convert candidate enthusiasm to candidate turnout at the caucuses.
Whoever did this ad is a master at their craft.

(58,724 posts)I am saying, for me personally, I respond more favorable to ads that have content such as the candidate identifying problems they intend to tackle and/or solutions and ideas that they plan to pursue.
Bernie has many such ads and those are the ones I like the best.

(58,724 posts)I can definitely be a bit cynical about that kind of thing.
I guess I just have a preference for an ad that actually communicates policy positions and/or qualifications for the job.
Bernie has many such ads, and I like them a lot.

(31,935 posts)the positive tone of his campaign and it's overall message, which is that it's time to unite to work together if we're going to "find" America again. It's simple and straightforward; a complete break from the usual campaign ad. The only ad I've seen that was more effective was Reagan's back in '79, only this one is actually promoting truth. Reagan's sold a fantasy.

I've been so disappointed in this country for so long, but the movement is here and it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. This is the most beautiful political ad I've ever seen. (11,410 posts)Takeaway
Mr. Sanders has created an ad with a vastly different feel from anything else seen in the race since Mrs. Clinton announced her candidacy in a hope-filled two-minute video. It strikingly contrasts with Mrs. Clintons own minute-long closing argument to Iowans, which is replete with grave warnings and bold promises. And it is likely to stand out amid the clutter of attack ads and boasts from candidates and their allies in both parties

(13,297 posts)It's actually starting to be shown on Friday, but even today it is causing quite a fervor:
Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., released a new ad for his presidential campaign on Thursday that features Simon & Garfunkels 1968 song America.
One political ad maker who has worked on Democratic presidential campaigns and asked to remain anonymous because he did not want to be seen as taking sides in the primary told Yahoo he thought Sanders commercial was beautiful and stirring. The Democratic ad maker, who talked to Yahoo, gave the commercial rave reviews.
I think its beautiful. Im a sucker for a well-scored spot, and when youve got permission to use a stirring track like America, youre off on the right foot, he said.

I direct and edit video for a living, well that and play music, and I gotta say, just as a piece of video is really, really well put together... it's emotive, but more importantly it make you feel like Sanders is about the future and normal people.
I just upped my donation amount. I literally am probably the most broke guy you know, but fuck it... this is too important to not do my best to help.

(3,343 posts)If you're talking a single camera thing with no costs but shooting and editing (ie no actors scripts special fx green screens etc) the it can be very cheap. 700-1000 all in.
However prices can go up pretty severely if you add other things.
People should basically say, "here's a flat rate for a shoot and edit" . If you start asking for more they'll have a set cost for the additional stuff.
Hope that was helpful.
If you have any other questions just ask.

(31,935 posts)I posted to Bernie's campaign that even though I'm white, it doesn't feel home ("America" to me simply because I've never lived in any city that wasn't at least 30% black, with plenty of other minorities in the mix as well. Heck, my junior high was 80% black, so that large of a white majority doesn't feel "normal" to me. I suspect it was tailored to Iowa, but it's still going to be picked up online. Hopefully they'll fix that when they focus on other States.
