Spot check of Hillary Clinton's Senate record fails to support bipartisanship claim By C. Eugene Emery Jr. on Wednesday, January 20th, 2016 at 12:10 p.m.
So on the campaign trail in Iowa, Democrat Hillary Clinton said she could work with Republicans because that's what she did when she served in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2009.
"When I was in the Senate, of course I had to work with Republicans. I think every piece of legislation, just about, that I ever introduced had a Republican co-sponsor," she said at a campaign organizing event in Toledo, a small town between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
PolitiFact, which is in Iowa this week covering the caucuses, wanted to see if Clinton had that right.
snip
Our ruling: We rate this claim False.
By our review of legislation introduced by Clinton, she isn't even close.
Her campaign says she meant to cast the statement differently, but we cannot rule based on what candidates intended to say. Clinton introduced a significant amount of legislation without Republican co-sponsors.

(2,262 posts)that almost sound plausible. Hillary has nearly perfected that practice, except for her anger. When she's pissed, lies roll of her tongue and sound like lies. She must be a very unhappy person in general.

'Course, if she'd had the courage to stand with Ted Kennedy and Bernie Sanders,
and do what was right,
she'd probably be President right now...

Hillary has shown the world that reconstruction is just a myth. IMO, saying that she cares about the people or Iowa and the rest of the states, is also a myth.

(130 posts)A lot of them are libertarians or pseudo-cons who want nothing more than a Sanders vs Trump election to get back at the 'establishment.' These are people who put ideology ahead of common sense and some wouldn't care if Trump got elected instead.

(20,453 posts)Most people who no longer can be true believers of an oligarchy are actually excited by Sanders. It's not just the majority of those who are active in Democratic primaries.
The majority of people want health care as a right and no longer can tolerate being debt slaves. Incremental adjustments will not change what has been building in America over the past 30 to 40 years. That is exactly why so many people were waiting for someone like Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton has not risen to that level.

(5,856 posts)if that's possible. And she is worried about whether Sanders can get legislation passed? Presumably, she has some plan to by-pass Congress for 8 years to prove she is a progressive that "can get things done".... yeah, right.

She's usually criticized here for being too centrist. It's funny that now she's being criticized for not being centrist enough.
She wasn't "lying" -- in her memory, she probably had more Republican cosponsors than she really did.

(45,251 posts)It's is not only centrists who can work with Republicans. You're conflating two different things.
Centrists work with Republicans to pass things Republicans want anyway, like repeal of Glass Steagall and NAFTA.
Sanders works with Republicans and Democrats to pass what he thinks will benefit people. And he does that far better than Hillary.

(45,251 posts)You will be told she did that to prevent a Constitutional amendment, an excuse Bill used for DOMA. It was false as to DOMA. (read the wiki)
As to flag burning, neither of Hillary's unconstitutional bills passed and and it's been some years since she left the Senate. No constitutional amendment has emerged from Congress, though. So....how serious was the threat? It's just something Republicans have been bringing up again and again as fodder for their base.

(45,251 posts)I've posted some version of the following when I reply to something claiming Hillary can get things done and Bernie cannot.
While a Senator, Hillary had zero success working with Republicans to get bills she wrote passed, except for strictly ceremonial bills, such as re-naming a post office, remembering Harriet Tubman's birthday and remembering the anniversary of the American Revolution.
She could not even get her two unconstitutional flag desecration bills passed and Republicans themselves have initiated that kind of bill again and again. Since her Senate days, she has been gratuitously disrespectful to Republicans, calling them the enemy of which she is most proud and acting a certain way during the Benghazi hearings. (For that matter, she could not even get Billarycare through a Democratic Congress when her husband was head of the Democratic Party.)
Contradistinctively, Bernie and McCain worked on a veterans' bill that passed. The Brookings Institute made a case study in working across the aisle. http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/07/how-bernie-sanders-fought-for-our-veterans-119708 He also got an amendment to the ACA he wrote passed, providing $11 billion in health care to those who would not otherwise have received it.

(51,076 posts)most of us would give anything to vote for a woman President, I know I would but I'm not going to vote just based on that alone. If she had something to offer other than that that would be great but so far she hasn't. Oh she gets pissed easily when confronted with facts but thats not something to base a vote on either. I want someone who is a leader who I think can lead us and no better way to find that person than to research what a candidate has and is doing. She hasn't done much and isn't doing shit right now to bridge win my vote.
I've seen so many clips where Bernie was getting in someones face for something they said or something they did or are doing that it makes it an easy pick for me to support him
Bernie on Greenspan and his policies that about sunk our country, Bernie on duke cunningham berating our gay brothers and sisters proudly serving in the military is but just a couple of the clips I've seen recently. The man is fearless and I like that in a leader. Stupid fearless like the dick and little boots not so much but fearless like Sanders is I very much do.
Bernie Sanders will be our next President

(4,229 posts)Clinton had to frequently ask her aids about her congressional record. Aberdin said she was often confused.
The emails seem to suggest she was pretty much waited on hand and foot by aids.
So if she was speaking off the cuff she probably just overestimated the amount co sponsored. 68% is still a decent amount.
However I wouldn't be bragging about it in the primary.

(45,251 posts)Please see Reply 29.
The most inexperienced and ineffectual Senator on earth can co-sponsor a bill. One year H.R. 676, aka Medicare for All, had 100 co-sponsors, all, I believe, members of what was then called the House Progressive Caucus that Bernie founded. Co-sponsoring is nothing to run for re-election on, let alone to run for POTUS on.

(45,251 posts)I'm sure Harriet Tubman's descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution appreciated those ceremonial bills she got passed though.
How about that bigoted Marine recruiter who wouldn't let her enlist a few days after her wedding because she was too woman and too old?
A life full of danger and suffering! Still, she won't get out of public life. That's our Hill!
