2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumOnly one sitting politician dared run against Hillary
You know that there are plenty who want to run, but democratic pols meekly agreed that it's Hillary's term. Now maybe all sitting dem politicians adore and esteem Hillary to the extent that they think she'd be a much better president than they would, or they were, for various reasons, too timid to challenge her.
Whatever the political calculations, Bernie had the guts to take her on.

Bernie's no coward and it's what I love about his candidacy! He is not one of "them", not beholdened to anyone but The People and definitely not the status quo.

(10,494 posts)I am sure their donors told them not to run. Hillary will give them what they want so they didn't want her dinged or have to spend their money in the Primary. This is another way they get to pick who we vote for. It's insidious and plain wrong!
Kudos to Bernie for stepping up for us!

(10,122 posts)starting for me as a young student in the 60s.
I flashed back to protesting the Vietnam war, MLK and civil rights, supporting the Kennedys, streak protesting Nixon's "I have nothing to hide", gay rights, housing issues, etc, etc.
Bernie is supposedly an "independent" but to me, he really isn't. To me, he stands for so many of the things we stood for decades ago. To me, Bernie's more of a Democrat now than the Democrats who have moved to the center as the GOP has pulled harder to the right.
I was thinking for a moment of the tea party annoying whiners demanding "I want my country back" and yet in a way for me, that is what Bernie honestly represents. As young kids, we were right about Vietnam, MLK, the Kennedys, streaking Nixon, gay rights, etc. And we're still right on those issues today. We moved on with our lives: jobs, marriage, kids, etc with less time available for protests, etc while Bernie fought on. For that, I deeply respect and appreciate Bernie.
He's a special man.

(12,504 posts)When the congressional and senatorial critters are all in DC, you don't think they can see and determine who they think is best dressed, mannered, knowledgable, experienced and garnering a wave of support from the population? It's called support.
Of course the Bernie crowd would rather interpret that as fear, because it's how they always spin the narrative to fit their paradigm.
As for Bernie being the only one...he wasn't and isn't a Dem anyway, so why wouldn't he want to run? he's not competing with Hillary as a true Democrat, he just wants the Dem voters. It's what he has been building up to the for the last 25 years.
