2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThose Millennials? Not only will they vote, they've made
themselves into a veritable army of volunteers
Every few days, I check out the subreddit Bernie for President. I've been impressed, not just about the enthusiasm and level of discourse, but the structure set up by the 24 year old kid who runs it. They've raised over 800 grand. Sanders announced on reddit and did a AMA; staffers do AMA's not infrequently.
I was just checking it out and I thought I'd post a couple of links:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/comments/42g7ih/assembling_an_army_of_berners_to_reinforce/
https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/comments/42lzld/make_no_mistake_bernie_is_not_winningfight_like/
And this reflects a lot of reddit Bernie supporters:
Even if bernie loses the primary, he should campaign for progressive democrats/greens/dem socialists all across the country. We need to parlay this primary season into a real liberal grassroots movement to take the democratic party back from the third way pro corporate democrats (i.n.o.)
Anyway, I highly recommend checking it out

(22,271 posts)every time I hear the Hillary supporters claim that the millennials won't show up to vote. Riggghhhht. These guys are out there working their asses off campaigning, phone banking, hosting events, registering people to vote and donating and, after all that, they think the millennials won't show up to vote?

They think Hillary is a poser, and Bernie is the real deal.
Be sure to check out Hillary's redditt's forum it has just 2,000 subscribers.......... Bernie has 160,278 subscribers..........
That's the real deal.

(1,858 posts)Of course, a big problem will be the seats in congress that will not be won if Sanders isn't in the general. I think some will still show up regardless, but a lot less and it will costs seats, IMHO.

(11,366 posts)There's next to no enthusiasm for her, Millennials won't show up and Independents can't stand her. I think she loses Ohio, North Carolina, Florida and Colorado.
Hard to win without getting any of those.
However, I do agree with you, absolutely, on the down-ticket races.

(1,772 posts)show me where they have analyzed the costs of Sander's health care plan and free college plan?
Where have they thought about what kind of limitations (e.g. who qualifies, what is paid) these plans would have?

He's been quite clear that we need a sea change in Congress before that happens. They, like I, expect Sanders to fight against corporate control and influence, riddling our politics.
hill2016
(1,772 posts)there hasn't been any critical analysis of Sander's plans or stump speech?
Why then do you say there's a high level of discourse? Everyone agreeing with one another isn't "high level of discourse".
cali
(114,904 posts)And you have the rather sad habit of making uninformed pronouncements. It's clear you have no knowledge of the discourse or activities there. All this makes having an informed or intelligent exchange with you, damned hard.
And you have an ugly double standard.
you point me to a substantive discussion of any of Sander's major platform positions on Reddit?
cali
(114,904 posts)I find it impossible to have an honest, intelligent conversation with you. You filter out what you don't want to discuss. You go off on tangents. You don't appear to understand fairly clear responses.
In other words, discussion with you is a Sisyphean task.
I'm done.

(53,521 posts)I doubt Sanders pulled his college tuition plan out of his ass, either.
And That is the point. Any "analysis" that is outside the conventional thinking of the Establishment Bubble (that is, "ideology" in the Marxist sense of the word) does not exist in the minds of Clinton supporters.
but policy wonks and commentators like Ezra Klein and Paul Krugman say that Bernie single payer plan doesn't add up in terms of the numbers.
And Sander's high frequency tax won't raise nearly as much money as he wants it to to pay for free public college tuition.

They grew up in an age where military conflict has serious consequences, and who gives 2 fucks if the neighbor is a lesbian if the bills aren't paid cause the interest on the house, credit card, car AND student loan are all 20%.
This the non-violent revolution that Democracy PROMISES us, and our job as their parents and grandparents is to facilitate, NOT HINDER, their acceptance of the responsibility that they're the ones that will save the world.
If we don't facilitate that energy, it will be out of fear of losing political power that we (mostly) took a generational pass on anyway.

(28,075 posts)up until then she'll throw us a few verbal crumbs (that will promptly be forgotten after the election). As much as it pains the Third Way, they know they need us in November.
If she wins they purge us; if she loses they blame us and purge us. Never mind that liberals tend to be the most reliable voters in terms of working for candidates, showing up to vote and voting for the Democratic candidates.

Millennials to say they won't vote. Are too frivolous to show up.
They don't care about college debt?
Or global warming?
Or BLM?
Or LGBT rights?
Or equal pay for women?
They care about the future as much as Boomers.
Millennials weren't born or were very young when the Clintons were in charge so all they really know is the two candidates right now. And in comparing them as they appear side by side right nowit's clear that Bernie is the more trustable one.

(22,271 posts)Careful . . . the Boomers are right there with you. Divide and conquer is what the other side does. Bringing people together is what the Bernie campaign is all about.

(13,855 posts)Having a woman as President isn't enough for them. They have a lot of years left to vote and they know it will happen in their lifetime. A lot of older boomers want it to happen now so they can see it take place. I can't blame them but there's too much at stake to vote for a Wall Street cheerleader just because she happens to be a woman.

(34,104 posts)It is so amazing to witness on this site the Hope vs Nope campaigns.
Millennials are certainly not thinking things through or even bothering to investigate, all they see is the word FREE! Run for the hills people, they are showing up to take over from what we did when we were their age! I think I remember hearing the very same things when we were trying to move the country to a more equal and peaceful place.
At 62 I thought I would have become like those we fought against then, isn't that how it is supposed to happen? That is my NOPE.
As a country we have HOPE and that is the true motivator to be a better, more equal nation.
llmart
(15,536 posts)born after WWII back in the '40's and I'm here to agree with you that I am just as liberal now as I was back then. I am not underestimating the millennials. I saw my first Bernie bumper sticker in my area and a youngish guy got out of the car. I was thrilled to see that.
A lot of people my age have given up on politics and are focusing on their last decades/years of life. I used to live and breathe the news, but not so much any more. This is true of many of my neighbors and friends who are my age. They'll still vote (maybe) but don't have the passion they used to. That's normal. So, it really is up to younger people to take control of the process and steer the country in the direction they want it to go for the rest of their lifetimes. They have so much more time left than my generation does.
I hope they come out in droves and vote progressively.
MuseRider
(34,104 posts)To see them get involved and excited after so much disinterest. Hell, I have not been really engaged for a very long time. Issues yes, but elections? I am a bit tired of writing in, "someone who will use peace as an organizing principle" but there it is. I believe in this campaign. I truly believe in it.
It is amazing to finally see a group of young people really become involved. I love Occupy, BLM and this campaign. I am so excited to be the old person in the group. It is refreshing to hear them and listen to them hash through ideas. A group of them organized a fund raiser to purchase a billboard for Bernie. They have just gotten the money needed and are now finalizing the way it will look. It makes me really happy.
