Feminist Majority Endorses Hillary Clinton for President

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JANUARY 26, 2016 – The Feminist Majority is proud to announce today its endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton for President of the United States. Hillary has a decades-long record of achievement in advancing both women’s rights and civil rights, and has made fighting for low-income families a priority. She has demonstrated the leadership and vision necessary to move our country forward.

Hillary has worked to close the gender and race pay gap, fought to end race-based segregation in education, and is a champion of reproductive rights. She has supported ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, fought for passage and reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, prioritized women’s rights globally, and successfully used her power in the Senate, along with Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), to push for FDA approval of emergency contraception. Hillary supports paid family and medical leave and played a major role in passing the State Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which provides 8 million low-income children with access to health care.

“Battle after battle, Hillary has proven that she will not only stand with the feminist community, but that our fight is her fight. ....................“Hillary has demonstrated her deep commitment to women’s rights and advancement. Through her actions and words, she has inspired women worldwide to take leadership, and countless nations of the world to prioritize women’s and girls’ advancement in the economy, education, and health care.”

“Women and girls, at long last, deserve a feminist woman in the White House whom we can count on to fight for us every day,” said Katherine Spillar, Feminist Majority Executive Director. “Not only can we count on Hillary to defeat efforts to make abortion illegal and family planning inaccessible, but she will lead efforts to make reproductive health services, including abortion, more accessible for low-income women and women of color. She will lead efforts to stop sexual assault in colleges, high schools, and in the military. She will reshape the efforts to gain paid family medical leave without increasing payroll taxes which disproportionately hit low and middle-income workers.”

“Hillary gets things done because she is a strong, trusted leader who never gives up fighting for people, families, and children. In fighting for comprehensive health care reform, she played a major role in securing SCHIP for the children of low-income families. She is a leader who is inclusive – she brings people together – and she will fight for immigration reform and the DREAMers. She has the wisdom and experience to take our country forward,” said Dolores Huerta, co-founder of United Farm Workers, and Feminist Majority board member.

“Hillary Clinton’s vision for the future and her 2016 campaign have prioritized feminist issues like no other presidential campaign in history. She has pledged to end the Hyde Amendment, which prevents low-income women receiving Medicaid from accessing abortion care,”
commented Gaylynn Burroughs, Feminist Majority Policy Director. “She supports the Equality Act to add to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protection against discrimination for the LGBT community, as well as ENDA to stop employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. She has committed to strengthening efforts to address climate change, create more affordable childcare, and build a more equitable tax code. She has also vowed to fight voter suppression and make it easier, not harder, for people of color, women, and young people to vote.” continued Burroughs.

In Grinnell, Frances said, "I want to be President too." "I'll make it easier for you," Hillary replied.

unless they were thrown off welfare and working minimum wage jobs.

This is careerist, privileged "feminism" and it sickens me that our movement has been hijacked by these interests.

and destroying our planet. Sadly, Hillary stands with the global corporatists. Feminism is more than adherence to a few policy positions. When you throw hundreds of thousands of women off welfare beginning in the 90s (which she proudly defends) and support decisions that harm hundreds of thousands more (like in the Iraq war), you've lost my belief that you're a "champion" of women.

Eleanor Smeal disappoints me but I'm not surprised.

Y'all beat up on me here, and I'll just go off now to keep getting beaten up by a few Sanders supporters on another thread because I called out sexist comments that were made about Hillary's speaking and body language last night.

Apparently, you can't be a radical feminist and anti-corporatist. Maybe I can find the three other people on DU who share these crazy apparently incompatible belief systems and we can start our own group.

Fun times!

Bernie Sanders voted 5 times against the Brady Bill. He voted to protect gun manufacturers from liability. He voted against gun violence research by the CDC. I see you aren't bringing up the blood on Bernie Sander's hand for the victims of gun violence. How convenient of you.

I try not to be punitive when it comes to organizations that do good work, just because they don't agree with me hundred percent about every thing, in particular which Democratic candidate they might support. If everyone did that all the time these organizations would go to dust, and that's not good for anyone, although it appears that you would get some small satisfaction from it! Good for you!

What a weird post--to suggest I'm personally responsible for keeping the non-profit world alive or something and thus don't have the right to express my dissatisfaction with organizations that have drastically departed from my values.

By your logic, I should join the Catholic Church because it undeniably "does good work" --which it most certainly does--even though I disagree with other positions of theirs.

The Feminist Majority, which is neither, is inserting itself into the primary rather than helping galvanize closure and support for a general election.

There is quite a difference.

The reason organizations like this _shouldn't_ insert themselves into political contests this early is precisely because they're supposed to avoid "going to dust" by polarizing people by the behavior in which they just engaged.

My distancing myself from an organization that now greatly departs from my values is a consequence of their decision. It is not my personal responsibility to be part of their organization in order to keep them afloat.

It's a punitive action to a nonprofit that you evidently once upon a time supported, so this has nothing to do with the Catholic Church! So to me that Comparison was nonsensical!

But of course you need to do what will make you feel fulfilled, and please don't worry about anyone else...as you have every right to be us punitive as you so choose. That's the beauty of choice!

Love the pic. That has been a common occurrence in all her campaigns. Mothers and grandmothers bringing young girls to hear her speak and to get a photo. Girls need more role models than just Disney princesses and music stars.
