2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPelosi pushes back on Sanders' pledge to raise taxes
If you what evidence that Bernie's single payer health system is pie in the sky, you no longer have to point out that the Republicans in Congress will never let it happen. Instead pay attention to what Nancy Pelosi, the ranking Democrat in the House, is saying about the tax increases which would have to pay for the program:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi maintains she isn't taking sides in the Democratic primary for president, but pushed back against Bernie Sanders' pledge that he would raise taxes to pay for his health care plan, saying flatly on Wednesday, "We're not running on any platform of raising taxes."
Speaking at the House Democratic Caucus' annual retreat here, Pelosi sidestepped a question about the growing concerns of fellow Democrats over the impact Sanders could have on 2016 House and Senate races, saying, "I'm very proud of all three of our candidates."
But the top House Democrat didn't mince words when it came to Vermont Senator Sanders' health care proposal, dismissing the notion of a single-payer health care plan, curtly saying, That's not going to happen."
(snip)
But then Pelosi took another pointed swipe at Sanders' plan, saying, "It's no use having a conversation about something that's not going to happen."

(13,088 posts)That should really excite the voters and get them to the polls.
I am so sick of these rich f**k politicians deciding that we don't
deserve to have health care.
I am so sick of these rich f**k politicians protecting the rich at the
expense of the everyone else.
It appears the politicians in this country hate the very people they
are elected by and paid by to represent.
If you like things the way they are, vote for Hillary.
If you care about your fellow citizens vote for Bernie.

(5,648 posts)Proposals from politicians are worse than worthless if they are unrealistic because the public views them as promises - promises which can never be kept.
Bernie might as well be talking about making everyone rich, because that isn't going to happen either.
No sensible Democrat in the House or the Senate would waste much time proposing a plan which not even his/her Democratic colleagues would support. They would look worse then the House Republicans who tried to defund Obama Care - oh darn, I lose track of how many times.

(45,319 posts)start this process? ENDA has yet to pass and it was first introduced as the Equality Act in 1974. Even Nancy could not finish that work. Some things take years to accomplish, that does not mean they should not be attempted.
This toxic pessimism of hers is part of the problem. 'Hope is off the table' say the Pelosi Democrats 'so don't even try it'.

(5,648 posts)....to the Republicans because a revolt by a bunch of folks who have lost touch with reality. These are political pros who know what is possible in this country and what it is not. Politics is the art of the possible. It's nice to have dreams, but when dreams start interfering with your reality, you have problems.
Bernie's people see themselves as leaders of a revolution just the Tea Party zealots see themselves as the leaders of a revolution. Both sides are leaders without followers.
This country has flowed back in forth between liberalism and conservationism throughout its history, but it never ventured very far before it gravitated back towards the political middle. Zealots on both sides were always ultimately disappointed.

(45,319 posts)I brought up specific issues and aspects of the process by which progress is achieved. You responded with characterizations of those you disagree with devoid of actual response.
You should just admit you have no valid response and move on.

(4,915 posts)and isn't that a bit arrogant of Nancy. "We're not running on any platform of raising taxes . . . . "
Hey, how about waiting to see what the VOTERS want?
"No use having a conversation about something that's not going to happen"
In other words - Screw you Americans. If you want something like healthcare or free public college or paid family leave - count me out. I don't want to work that hard.

(5,648 posts)Which defeats the Bernie narrative that Bernie's very presence will ultimately change the composition of Congress to the point that he can get some of his radical proposals like a single payer health system through Congress.

(15,546 posts)Congress passes laws and the Prez enforces them. If Nancy, at this point, doesn't feel the pressure to lead on a bill changing tax laws, we need to elect enough Dem Reps, gain a majority and to apply pressure to her (my constituents want the laws changed). Then do the same in the Senate.
