2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRACIAL PROFILING ALLEGED AT BERNIE SANDERS RALLY IN ST. PAUL
Not everyone left happy. A handful of black activists are claiming they were racially profiled and denied a privilege they hadn't even asked for. The claims led to an ongoing fight on Twitter; the messy fallout is another example of the fragile alliance of liberals, radicals, and youths Sanders has to capture and preserve to overcome Hillary Clinton.
Initially the tale unfolded in a long train of tweets from a number of different people. Fortunately, someone in the affected group gave a more comprehensive version of the story to the This Week in Blackness podcast, which retold that side's story yesterday. A group of seven young black women had gone to the rally to hand out fliers to raise awareness about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and its effect on the local African immigrant population.
After they arrived, someone from the Sanders campaign approached the group, and asked if they'd want to stand on the platform behind the candidate during the speech. These spots are prime real estate for winding up on local or national TV coverage, and event planners are known to go out of their way to throw together a collage of people with varying ages, looks, and races.

(53,031 posts)isn't favorable to Bernie is pretty incredible, but we see it here every day. Frankly, I find that kind of uncritical reverence for authority deeply disturbing.
Yes, I remember the BLM controversy very well. That is when I learned that how some use the word "progressive" bears no relationship to leftism, social justice, or anything other than absolute deference for a great man.
I will NEVER believe that one man's comfort is more important than the lives of human beings. I find the entire argument horrible and showed me in no uncertain terms that I could never support such a campaign. I learned a lot about who people were from that incident, and now we see people anxious to resurrect it.
The irony of the rhetoric of revolution in face of opposition to people's movements, activism that is about human lives rather than one man's political campaign, is stunning. I don't understand this notion of "progressivism" where the people need to be deferential to men in power, where their rights--to not be killed-- to equality and political protest pale in comparison to one man's political career, the notion that he should not be confronted by the people he seeks to represent.
I'm going to Iowa this weekend to volunteer for Clinton. You've reminded me quite clearly what is at stake in this election, and why it is essential that she rather than Bernie win the nomination. For that, I thank you. I will think of all the people who attack BLM, PP, NARAL, unions, and the mothers whose sons were slain by gun violence while I work on GOTV for Clinton.
Almost wish there was a whistling emoticon. That's got to be one of the lowest things I've ever seen posited on this website-- you've reminded me of why my ignore list is something that needs frequent updates. I believe those people were only going to stir trouble, so it was literally a damned if he did, damned if he didn't situation. If he threw them out, he'd be accused of racism. If he didn't throw them out, he'd have been trampled by people much with much less meaningful to say than the activists who hijacked his speech last time.
So hey, if your conscience is crooked enough to lead you to volunteer for the habitual enemy of the people you so clearly wish to put on a pedestal for the last sixteen years, have at it. Just another person to add to my ignore list.

The part you focus on is likely only part of the story and the part that feeds into the HRC supporter meme that Sanders and his supporters hate people of color worse than the KKK. The lenghs you people are going to paint a Democratic Party candidate for president as a racist is vile.

The Sanders staffer approached the crowd waiting to get on stage, and identified a handful who were no longer welcome to those special spots. The moment was caught on cellphone video, later tweeted out by one of the people barred from the stage. According to the people involved, the campaign worker pointed out black attendees, only, including some who weren't even affiliated with the activist group.

I see someone alerted on your post and even though if ANYONE is troll-ing around in this thread it's you, it was 1-6 to leave it alone. Which I have no doubt is exactly what you're counting on.
And it's obvious that you care. You went from "reading and lurking" for over ten FREAKING YEARS to come out for the sole purpose of denouncing bravenak. She is clearly TERRIBLY important to you. And now you come out with the "fangirl" stuff. When did folks stop using that -- 2010? Well, that is some improvement! In a few more years, you may actually be current!
Not.
Just keeping the playing field level regardless of the players whatever their names. DU has become distinctly "unlevel" with declared trolls like bravenak running amok. I'm unconcerned with candidate affiliation and more concerned with trollish posting. I've lurked until now when the trolling has become extreme and proudly proclaimed.

Bravenak was right on with her assessments of how the AA community would receive Bernie's economic focus and how his supporters trashing Obama would also be a turnoff. I still can't believe the downright irrational hostility the BS camp employs against large segments of the Democratic party base. There is no rational explanation for it.

(4,377 posts)They made millions of people wake up, look at the unfairness and inequality and make them realize that it was not only real but that millions of fellow Americans shared the same feelings and anger. Showing people that there is a real desire for positive change is such a hugely important and motivating thing.
Bernie may still lose like he was always expected to, but now there will be many people who end up working towards progressive causes that otherwise would have just believed that nothing can ever change. That's a very powerful thing.

(53,031 posts)They were passing out fliers about immigration policy toward East Africans. We have a large and politically engaged East African Muslim population in the Twin Cities. It's a very diverse area. Evidently that diversity, according to Imandi Ghandi, was not reflected at the Sanders rally, which is the only way profiling could even be possible.
Elom James White is saying that the staff heard there might be a protest so they started pointing at random black people. How is that anything other than profiling? It wasn't just one person who was targeted.
White is trying to be fair and give a sense of the events. He isn't trying to indict or excuse Bernie. I know it's ridiculous even suggesting that anyone could possibly have any right to say anything that might contradict anyone associated with the Sanders campaign. No need for facts. No need to consider anyone's word other than Bernie and his staff. Of course everyone but Bernie and his staff are liars. They are perfect and the rest of Americans hopelessly inferior.
