How Bernie Sanders Campaign Disappointed And Offended Nevadas Most Powerful UnionReports surfaced Thursday alleging that campaign employees of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) had posed as hotel workers on the Las Vegas Strip in order to preach to members of the Culinary Union one of the biggest and most politically influential unions in the key early caucus state.
The Culinary Union confirmed the reports, telling ThinkProgress in a statement that the campaigns actions left them disappointed and offended.
Its completely inappropriate for any campaign to attempt to mislead Culinary Union members, especially at their place of work, said the unions Secretary-Treasurer Geoconda Arguello-Kline. We strongly condemn anyone falsifying their affiliation with the Culinary Union in order to gain access to properties and we will cooperate with casinos and hotels so that this matter is fully resolved.
Sanders campaign workers visited four unionized hotels, The Rio, Paris, The Mirage and Planet Hollywood, and by wearing the unions iconic yellow button, accessed employee dining rooms to speak with and give Sanders literature to workers.
The Sanders campaign did not respond to inquires from ThinkProgress about the incident.

This is not just volunteers or over-zealous supporters. This is campaign employees. It is an official action. Has the Sanders campaign done this in other states or with other unions? Who gave the order to dress up like union members? Do the ends justify the means?

(52,129 posts)The union had a privileged position relative to anyone else in that they got to vote either where they worked or at home and got to make their vote count for more than others at least potentially. For example, if I were out there I would have to had vote at my home caucus no matter what percent of the people were there for my candidate but a casino worker could choose to vote at site A where they might do nothing or site B where they make the difference for getting an extra delegate.

(4,877 posts)Too funny. And such obvious innuendo in the bad writing of this "report".
First Ralston points out that this issue is resolved.
Then he immediately says "How so? I'm told the sanders campaign has agreed not to try to enter the employee dining rooms again."
Then he regurgitates all the information from the previous day that has already "been resolved".
All the Sanders campaign has said is that some campaign staff wore Labor buttons in solidarity with the union WHILE wearing Sanders paraphenalia. All that has happened since the original brouhaha is that the union and the Sanders people have resolved the issue. No one has stated anything more.
So I ask . . . who told him that the Sanders campaign has agreed not to try to enter the employee dining rooms again"? The voices in his head?

(4,775 posts)Those buttons are in no way anything like a membership card, not a lanyard, not ID, they're buttons saying we support the union, which I'm certaiin the Sanders supporters do, Bernie is all about labor.
I read the article and the background article (https://www.ralstonreports.com/blog/sanders-workers-are-masquerading-culinary-members-campaign-inside-hotels), saw nothing more than this.
I can understand the union not wanting their lunch area turned into a venue for campaign canvassing. But wearing those yellow lapel union buttons is not impersonating a union employee, not even close.
Also apparently the Clintons did the same or worse in 2008, shocked I am.

(34,825 posts)Did people from Sanders campaign breach a secured breakroom? Is the button the only part of the uniform that the employees wear? I'm having a hard time understanding how wearing a button is being construed as impersonating a union laborer. It's like if I wore a Philip Rivers jersey in hopes of impersonating a Charger.

(47,803 posts)Nevada's powerful Culinary Union and the Bernie Sanders campaign say they've resolved their issues after a kerfuffle earlier Thursday had the group at odds with the Vermont senator's presidential operation in a key early voting state.
The union had accused Bernie Sanders' campaign staffers of posing as union workers in an attempt to gain access to their members, a charge the Sanders campaign denied.
The union and Sanders campaigners later said the issue, which was first reported by Ralston Reports' Jon Ralston, had been settled.
"We've talked with the campaign and the situation has been resolved," Bethany Kahn, Culinary spokeswoman said in a statement.
Culinary has long been at the center of the Nevada caucuses. The union endorsed Barack Obama in 2008, a race where Clinton campaign staffers were accused of trying to infiltrate various casinos and resorts in Las Vegas.
