"Then they send me away, to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical..."

"...and they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical."

"Now watch what you say, or they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, a fanatical, criminal,
Oh won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable..."

Many have forgotten the words to this song, but I have never have. It's an ode to idealism, lost. And an apt commentary on today's political system, is it not?

"The logical song."

Dreamers are those who make change happen, in the face of 'pragmatism' that proclaims 'No we can't.'

Dare to dream, or choose the 'safe' road that leads to mediocrity or worse.

Sat Jan 30, 2016, 09:32 AM
Jan 2016

Yep. The same one that keeps saying "No, we can't"

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

GREAT songs like this back then! I'm a Boomer who has ALWAYS, even today followed music of each generation. Early on, we had a saying and I suppose it may not be universal, but down here in FL it was.

We called some the BEST music "Heavy Duty Dumb, Dumb" because our parents didn't quite understand "my generation!" I was always drawn to songs where the words had deep meaning for me, AND there were so many. I remember this one very well and LOVED it. I have many old albums from way back, even have a Bruce Springsteen album that's never been opened or played, Born In The USA album.

I was drawn to JACKSON BROWNE from the moment I heard "Doctor My Eyes" and while love so very many artists I call him my FAVORITE. I actually wore out several of his albums and had to replace them. I'm dating myself because that was the time of 8 tracks. But I always wanted the album too.

I have a folder that has the words of so many of his songs that I copied and printed out so that when I leave this earth my family can remember who and what I stood for.

But, thanks again... this is another GREAT!

Bernie should use it in an ad.

My favorite part of the song is the "chirping" from the Mattel handheld football game from my youth. It is the sound for change of possession and is heard I believe three separate times in the song.

One the best albums of all time!

in the polls. So this dream is not forthcoming. They don't always. It also does not work to simply reaffirm your wishes verbally each day. You have to convince other people.

It's so 60s and 70s rock star stuff - in the real world, you need confidence, but all the blathering in that song is unrealistic, and most people don't take rock lyrics seriously.

keep the Vietnam war going. Yeah, that was so 60's and 70's rock star stuff. Rock music had a lot to do with ending that war.

And it's not just the words, try listening to a movie or even some TV shows without the soundtrack. Try listening to Holst's "The Planets" and see how many different emotions are brought out of you. Music is a powerful mood setter and communication tool.

I'm not still trying to be a rock star, and I don't think that is sad. In fact, I never tried it. It would be a fun life, I think. Then again, so many of them end up doing drugs.

I have dreams for myself, some realized, but when it comes to politics, that takes convincing other people. Bernie can dream all he wants, he still have about 30% of the vote on average and that isn't going to increase because he keeps dreaming of it. It can give you confidence, but it's oversimplified to insist on this dreams angle as the way he's going to win a primary in two days. By now other things have to have been done to realize your dream.

Many thanks if you can give me advice.

I would also recommend Supertramp's first album, "Even in the Quietest Moments". It's the album that turned me on to them back in the late 70's as a high schooler, hanging out listening to music at a friend's house, while smoking copious amounts of the herb. The herb is much better now than it was then, lol. I have it on my IPOD and still listen to it regularly. The title song is hauntingly beautiful. Their music has aged very well.
