2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Sarah Palin movie on HBO. Anybody planning on watching it?
I saw the trailer on HBO.
It's called Game Change and comes on in March.
Ed Harris is John McCain; Julianne Moore is Sarah Palin.
I thought i was seeing the real Sarah Palin except that Moore's voice isn't screechy.
Might be interesting.
She is portrayed as having a nervous breakdown during the 2008 campaign.

(18,541 posts)If she's able to do a credible Palin, I'd say she's a shoo-in for the Oscar next year.
How could she even say some of the things Palin said without her eyes involuntarily rolling around like ball bearings?

(3,469 posts)I can't wait to see the movie although I wish it wasn't so focused on the McCain/Palin campaign. The book covered the Obama campaign and the Democratic primaries and I found that very interesting. I can see why they are focusing on the Palin stuff-way more drama. I don't get HBO but I plan to sign up for it in March and then cancel it.

(3,469 posts)I remember when it came out, it was getting slammed on here. I think that's because the media was breathlessly reporting all the gossipy stuff, the Palin meltdowns and the ugly Elizabeth Edwards stories in particular, so it seemed like a tabloid-style book. It was actually very dry, political wonk stuff for the most part. What really struck me is how much we think we know but really don't and how we only really know what they want us to know. That's a very convoluted sentence but since you read the book, you probably know what I mean. This wasn't talked about at all but I thought the book really exposed how much the media just parrots campaign talking points and doesn't actually report what is going on.
I read it when it first came out so my memory of the campaign was very fresh. There was one night in particular that I remembered being on DU and reading from Hillary supporters what she was up to that night-"Hillary is _______ and then she is going to ________ and then tomorrow she will be in _______." I remember thinking "Wow, this really is the place to go to know what is going on." When I read the book, and came to that night, something pretty major went down and WE HAD NO CLUE and all of that stuff we thought we knew was completely false. I think it was the night she flew down to meet with Edwards and I was so stunned that, not only did we not know about it, but, misinformation was leaked to throw people off.
There was a lot of stuff like that in the book and it made me feel pretty cynical about the whole process. People who read the book for the gossipy stuff were disappointed because the media had already released all the "juicy" bits but I thought the "boring" stuff was very revealing about the whole behind-the-scenes process.

(42,770 posts)gave it back. You are so right, to me, it offered that inside look that made so much of the surface
view that we had make sense. It read like a novel I couldn't put down.
It made me actually feel a bit of sympathy for the McCain people. They rushed in to
picking Palin. I mean, how bad could a woman who rose to governor of a state be? And then the
drip, drip, drip of realization that she was unfit and what the hell could they do about it.
It also made me realize that there was nothing Hillary could have done. She was a known quantity
and her numbers really actually stayed pretty stable throughout. It was just that Obama was
fresh and new and he had the upward momentum, timed perfectly to peak and overtake her.
Interesting too about Edwards trying to push himself as VP. Glad Obama didn't go for it.

(34,857 posts)I guess they could have focused on the entire process, from primary to general, but the movie is essentially a look at how McCain royally fucked up any chance he had (small anyway) of winning the election by selecting Palin.
