2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI have donated to both Clinton and Sanders, and am torn
When this election started, I felt strongly that it was about continuing the legacy of Obama's achievements, the ACA, the economy, deportation relief, and the recent diplomatic gains abroad. And so initially I gave Clinton my unwavering support.
Now I'm not so sure anymore. This president inherited the largest economic collapse since the depression, all because of the greed and fraud of Wall Street, with our government as enablers. A friend of mine pointed out to me that 8 years later, no one went to jail, the banks are as big as they have always been, and naturally still too big to fail. Most tragically of all, the widening economic chasm between the ultrawealthy and middle class remains vast. It is so vast that it has precipirated a mutated, racist, xenophobic, fascist populism that has fueled the support of Trump.
I believe that these are priorities that both Obama and Clinton deeply care about and want to desperately fix our economic disparities and to uplift the middle class, but can we truly expect anything to ever change as long as we have a crooked democracy that is essentially bought by the highest bidders? If it is not the presidency that is influenced by money, then it is certain to be majority of our legislators, and by proxy our supreme Court as it is the Senate who confirms the nominees.
Without urgent campaign finance reform, our government will remain one that is bought, and tarnished by money, regardless of who is in power.
I will support our party nominee regardless, but the only candidate I have heard who has offered a serious plan on reforming our democracy is Bernie Sanders.
I respect Hillary Clinton immensely, but until someone can convince me that she will make campaign finance reform among her top priorities, and can convince me that she will return any Wall Street or Pharma money donated to her campaign, my first choice is Bernie Sanders.

(37,428 posts)Found my wife had made a big donation to Clinton, and last night she sent an identical amount to Sanders.
I'm the diehard Berniebro, but am not blind to the fact that the two women in my house really want to see Clinton win the general (and yet are also pulling the lever for Sanders in the primary).
Apparently, the first woman president would be a big deal for chicks or something.
And should be for us all, and for all of us yet to come. The President as dude is a myth that needs to die in a fire.
