Santorum would be a courageous and brilliant GE opponent, we should fear him.

For the Right Wing Lurkers;

(You can quote at your little buddy sites)

We liberals should fear Santorum and not be making fun of him. He is a clear headed man with strong morals and principles. He will excite the 'silent' majority of the country and make it really really really really hard for us to bring our atheistic communalistic policies to fruition. We should hope that the Republicans pick anyone but Santorum.

For the rest of us;

Please ix-nay on the at-bay it-shay azy-cray ayings-sayof Antorum-Say until we get Omney-Ray out of the ace-ray. hat-thay way the Epublicans-Ray ill-way be ucked-fay even-say ay-ways to Unday-Say. Romney comes across as an automaton who will lie or triangulate based on the audience he is talking to at the moment. He's an obvious liar and IMO that's why the republicans are in the process of rejecting him. I think he'd be rejected as a phony in the general election as well.

However, Santorum has one huge advantage we should not underestimate. No matter how crazy the content of his speeches or the extremity of his positions he creates the impression of a reasonable, humble and sincere man if you don't happen to know his backround on the issues. He actually believes what he's saying and no matter how crazy you don't get the sense he's lying or repeating a talking point calculated for political effect.

I think Obama would tear Romney to bits but when it comes to the idea of running against Santorum we'd better be careful what we wish for IMO.

I am a PAer, I get him completely.

He is a smart guy, a very hard and capable campaigner, and he is exceptionally strong in all three core republican areas 1) Unabashed in pushing religion into government 2) One of the biggest of all war hawks 3) Ran K Street from the senate side when he was still there, so he is in with the big business types.

He has a JD and is generally well versed on most major issues. He is NOT a bachmann or cain type moron.

However, he GENUINELY believes the most far right of all positions and is open about it.

Whatever the end result of GWB's presidency was, he at least got there under the veil of being a moderate - "compassionate conservative." Bush's one true gift was a politician, being able to speak in moderate manner while being able to wink at the far right and them know for sure he was their guy.

Santorum absolutely would tighten up the party, and would get the grass roots people motivated, there is no doubt about that. But, he would not be able to have the same appeal the mushy middle that Romney probably would have. And, as much as he would energize HIS team, he would inversely energize the democratic net roots, he is THAT kind of guy, that would really put a charge into both sides.

His presence would juice up the Ds almost as much as it would juice up the Rs, and the difference would be less of an appeal to the indy vote.

Then when I worked later on, after his death, Bumps Blackwell (look him up) said to me in a recording session. "I just spoke pig latin and you understood it? O-fe??"

My daddy taught me. Then I discovered as we worked and associated with a lot of older black artists, I knew a lot about the black culture of the 30's and 40's and 50's.

Why? I don't know. But I blew away these older artists with my knowledge, a white boy from Burbank, that my daddy taught me. I don't know how he knew ...I wish I could ask him today.

Hi Daddy!

Just "undiscovered" by me.

My dad could've sat in with these guys too and communicated with 'em in a way that would've fit right in.

I've picked up a few of his characteristics, but somehow that white dude from Rochester NY was the master. Gone all these many years.

I hope he's swingin' away in some ethereal jazz club right now; right where he was always meant to be.

The major argument I've heard against Santorum is the name, which is good for giggles, but this kind of school yard stuff (his name means POOP!) doesn't disqualify him in the mind of sober grownups after the giggle. The fact that the left is impaired at the art of providing serious grownup critiques of this guy tells me that after the laughs, being where he is, he is very strong. Don't be surprised if this guy takes it, without a sober critique from us because we can't stop giggling.

But ultimately in a general election - most Americans want the President to go to Church and believe in Jesus Christ - but they really don't want someone who comes off as a religious nut. Attacking prenatal care on religious grounds , openly saying most Protestants have left the Christian faith and that the President doesn't believe in the Bible is certainly popular in the circles that comprise a significant portion of today's Republican Party primary voters. But it is simply too extreme on religiosity even for an essentially religious believing public.

(Sorry, I just woke up and kind missed the irony. I was just thinking - last year at this time I was still working in Saudi Arabia and there the government was very aggressively pushing prenatal screening. But Rick Santorum is telling the general public that prenatal screening is a secular, liberal socialist plot. Rick Santorum's anti-secularism is too extreme for Saudi Arabia)

If the republicans want to build a campaign around contraception (anti extra-marital sex - except when they are doing it), abortion, and gays, tinged with disdain for the poor and ethnic minorities, they could not pick a better candidate.

Since there is no point of them running on defense (Obama killed Osama), and the economy (see GWB), or guns (Obama did not take any of them away), all that they have left is God and Gays. You can't do better than Rikky for that.

Mr. Frothy just has to open his mouth and stupid flows out. Casey's smart, but not particularly good with a crowd or an enthusiastic speaker and he still opened a can of whoop-ass on Santorum - 17 points - freakin' 17 points in PA (technically 17.4, but still)! Even the rural areas leaned toward Casey. Mr. Frothy can count PA out of the Electoral College if he gets the nomination.

Oh, and how about that $100,000 he still owes Penn Hills for the con job to "cyberschool" his kids while they lived in Leesburg?

It's likely to go to a brokered convention (the GOP isn't big on actually CARING about votes, just keeping minorities out of the process). If that's the case, all bets are off, the field is open to all of the crazies including Palin, Perry, and Bachmann, and they'll just pick whoever the hell they think has the least ammunition of their own making for Obama to use. My money's on Huntsman. Yeah, it's almost all family money, but he isn't well known and doesn't have the trail of toxic sludge behind him that the other candidates do.

They're counting on PA (and need it), so I'm sure the GOP leaders aren't thrilled with Mr. Frothy.

A ticket of Porky Pig and Yogi Bear would get 40% of the vote as long they were the Republican nominees.
