Respect please, for DU and DUers

As a Bernie supporter and a longtime DU supporter, I want to encourage a little restraint and sensitivity among DUers in describing either candidate, just as you might exercise a little restraint discussing politics with your extended family at Christmas dinner.

Skinner started this site which allows us all to have these discussions, and he seems to be a Hillary supporter. I appreciate him because I appreciate that DU exists and I would not like to see it "burned to the ground"

There are times when I am less than thrilled by Hillary's demeanor, but I think it's important in a community to recognize that many here have strongly held opinions in the opposite direction.

I want to see Bernie elected aa do many. I personally was disappointed that Hillary decided to run, not because I disliked her but in a way, because I did. I thought she carried herself well as First Lady and had worked hard as Secretary of State and generally voted for the right things as a senator. i didn't want to witness the Clintons being subjected to all the crap the right wing would throw, all over again. I think she was absolutely right about "a vast right wing conspiracy" and it was painful to see it year after year.
I also thought that we needed fresh blood and more focus on fundamental change regarding our country's militarism and corporatism.

Then Bernie decided to run, and garnered enough support that my hopes are high that REAL reform would occur in America. It makes me mad to think that utilitarian politics and third way economics might stand in the way of what is FINALLY possible. So I get where some people's anger comes from.

But I like to remember, "The line between good and evil passes through every man's heart." Hillary is not Bernie, but she's not the wicked witch of the west, either. I don't think judging her so harshly is quite right -- haven't walked a mile in her shoes.

And Hillary supporters, before you go making antagonistic jokes about Bernie's electability, ask yourself if he hasn't served the Democratic Party well by voting with it consistently for all these years, or if you recognize how many of his supporters would be people that you would be FRIENDS with, partnering at gay rights marches, civil rights marches, environmental protests or any number of other important issues to Democrats, both small D and large D.

So ...please keep your critiques a little bit civil, for the sake of people in this community who have honestly-held differences of opinions and for the sake of your candidates, neither of whom needs their supporters to battle a civil war in the Democratic Party. It ain't over til it's over. At the end of the day, we want to be able to sit down and have Christmas dinner.
