2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIf you were judging the Presidential race by the way the news media frames it
you could conclude that only a Republican will win.
I'm absolutely disgusted with all of the channels. It is 24/7 Republican, Republican, Republican.
Am I the only person that has noticed this?

Aerows
(39,961 posts)It is going to the point where it is just "Which Republican will win?" by the way they frame it.
Um, hello, we have Democrats.

(19,326 posts)Of, by and for the corporations. The truth be damned. Journalism? What's that?
It could not be more obvious, and it's getting worse by the day. If we didn't have
social media, we'd be completely and utterly in the dark.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Republican, Republican, Republican day and freaking night.

(19,326 posts)It is very maddening, i agree.
I think we all need to adjust our expectations of M$M: it isn't "news" .. not even
close ... it's pure propaganda pretending to be news.
We clearly need to all rededicate our support for alternative media we trust (Democracy
Now, TYT, Thomm Hartman, et. al.) and use FB and twitter (which I don't use yet), to
stay abreast of what the fuck's really happening.
Clearly, if there were anything like responsible mainstream journalism going on,
Bernie would be the Democratic nominee, and soon be our President. I guess if
there's any "good news", this is it.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)to cover this fairly and in as neutral form as I can. And I have been accused of having a pro sanders bias, to the point I had to explain to readers why the hell I could give two shits about how many more voters have voted for HRC. Why? It is the delegates stupid.
Though the turnout matters.
It is like people really do not know this shit.
I guess it is becasue when you watch corporate media, you get conditioned to that shit, and not what actually decides elections.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)There is little to no coverage of the Democratic race, as though a Republican is the only person we can vote for.
It is sickening.
Obviously people are going to gripe if their candidate is shown in an unfavorable light, but damn, you can't even GET a light in the Democratic Primary. It is R R R.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)but when I have a college educated (masters) person I know locally arguing that more people have voted for one candidate over the other and that is what maters and has no clue about delegates... and they are political animals... it is frustrating as hell.
If we ever, (and it is possible, we are staring at an abyss), go to proportional representation, I will have to bring out dolls... about 100 of them, to explain this. (IMO it would also help solve gerrymandering)

(14,177 posts)I would think Trump is bound to win by a landslide. I probably would barely know Bernie is running. And there is some email thing with Hillary probably not important, but I would hear the story enough to be tired of it. And I would not no the difference between a pledge delegate and a super delegate so I would be thinking I am going to be voting for Hillary or T-rump.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)I don't think I have ever experienced an attempt to stack the deck as badly as this is going.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)So, it probably started in the late 70's. Maybe not that soon, but I was told about this kind of thing by many many professors. They also said 1984 was happening right under our noses and this was the mid 80's.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)and it does not matter how many times I have tried to explain this to her
For the record, the email story is not in the news. If it breaks the way some of us might see... it will come from left field.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)My SO watches the news every single day. I can't remember when it was in the summer though. I really didn't care then. But, that was before I started reading what she said in some of them. It's not good. They confirm war hawk tendencies and a predisposition to thinking RW governments in other countries are good for business in the US. Also she isn't shy of saying regime change is good.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)I know people who have managed and handled that kind of info. They were the ones who clued me in. As one put it, if he had done even a little of this mishandling, he would be doing years. The FBI was not ammused over Patreaus... and how he was treated with kid gloves. I think if they do this again, it could lead to an internal crisis.
And I am assuming DOJ finds the info. They don't, no matter what the impressions are, no charges.
Suffice it to say, those people in the services are akin in some ways to a Praetorian guard for empire. This justice double standard is pissing many of them to no end. And no, this is not an angle most people are thinking about.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I want people to read some of those emails to see what Hillary really thinks of other nations. And how she really feels about a ton of other issues. I am particularly upset about the situation with the Honduras. And no I don't expect Hillary to fix hundreds of years of oppression or the violence that is going on, but I do expect her to take it seriously when she is warned about what is going on and it appears she did not do that.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)that is an issue for me. Not just Honduras. She is commming from a neocon frame of mind.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)never mind I know why I read some emails and was like
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)the whole saga with Sidney blew my mind...
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I was reading the ones actually the ones from Jake Sullivan. I imagine she doesn't reply to emails all that often from what I saw. I don't know if she texted him back or called him back or had someone else email him back. Either way he sends like 25 to her one or even more than that. Like I said it appears she didn't take the situation he was telling her about seriously. But, perhaps she had a sit down or a phone conversation. In any case the outcome speaks volumes and she would send children back to that situation speaks even more. I am not even close to being okay with this. I have known many people who have fled violent countries and the violence is terrible, but the problems go even deeper than that. They often faced hunger because of the violence interrupting food shipments, disease because doctors would be killed off. Interruptions to their education was also frequent especially for girls. So, life is a nightmare even if you aren't a direct victim of the violence.

(39,961 posts)frankly, just exhibits bad judgment.
Why on earth would you give political opponents an entire arsenal of stench?
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)she talks about the RW attack machine and she is right it does indeed exist. But, then she gives them ammo. That makes no sense.

(39,961 posts)The whole deal with the Clinton Foundation getting donations from foreign leaders because she made arms deals at 3X any other Secretary of State had done is another ethics crisis in the making.
I do not understand our party anymore.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)It will probably not be a shock for me to reveal that I have never really fit in with any party. But, Democrats used to come closest to my values.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)that disturbs the hell out of me. It's no use to elect a Democrat if they turn around and act like right wingers.
I'm sitting here wondering if I should even post this, because I will likely get a hide. I said it, though, because it needed to be voiced.
The fact that the media seems to pretend that our only option is Republican A or Republican B is propaganda of the highest degree.
Did ethics just fly out of the window, or is it merely a disdain for anyone who is not ruthless?
nadinbrzezinski

I don't like war though and it should be avoided at all costs and by all costs I mean if we corporations with business interests they want protected we need to tell them to go piss up a rope.

(6,736 posts)I have friends on the right. I point this sort of trend out. They fixate on NPR then change the subject, then 5 minutes later it's 'liberal media this" and 'liberal media that.' Basically if it's not Fox, it's liberal, and they even eye Fox with distrust.
In some cases I've stopped pointing this out. The denial pains me when brought to the fore.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)so if you listen carefully, they are doing a better job of it. Which is where their distrust might be coming from My local affiliate has been very good, they engaged a local political scientist from a local college and even the national is starting to do more "straight" reporting. It is odd. from a media analysis perspective.

(39,961 posts)They can't even spare 30 seconds to discuss the Democratic primary.
joshcryer
(62,265 posts)Demographically the Republican is going to need a lot of narrative building to be able to even score a tie once the campaign actually begins. So they need to desperately act as if the Republican is a significant challenger, even though the Latino, AA, and woman vote are not in their favor at all.
Otherwise there won't be a horse race and the Democrat walks into the White House without much fanfare.
If they can bolster the Republican from now until election day they might be able to keep tension going long enough so that no one can reasonably call it before CA polls close. But they'll call it for the Democrat anyway, because there's nothing that can help the Republicans, not even Trump who is supposed to be creating some sort of white working class revolution we should all be trembling in our shoes over.

(3,524 posts)I don't really listen to the main stream media.
But I do worry about a potential Trump win because of one simple thing.
As a voter, we have a secret ballot.
