2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumObama 2008: "Yes we can!!"...Hillary 2016: "No, we can't !!!"
Hillary's response to all proposals of Bernie: "No, we can't!!"
No, we can't try to have free college education for the poor and middle class by taxing billionaires and millionaires
No, we can't try to cover everyone with medicare for all
No, we can't try making alternative energy our main source of energy, etc...etc...
NO WE CAN'T !!!
I would rather have a guy like Bernie who thinks we CAN and atleast will go down trying than Hillary who sounds like Republicans and can't get enough of saying "no, we can't!!" What a Debbie Downer !!

(10,721 posts)Their delivery is different. Part of that is personality. But it's also on account of the fact that we were coming off of 8 Bush years in '08 and are now coming off of 8 Obama years (while a Clinton Administration would continue along the same trajectory, Sanders is pushing for a change in direction). Also, Obama was running against folks who were basically the same from a platform/ideological standpoint and had to come across as if he was different somehow, whereas Clinton is running against one person and that person is rather unique (not that similar candidates haven't run before, but they haven't done as well and certainly haven't lasted this long, which is largely a product of a change in political climate).
Anyway, Bernard Chazelle wrote years ago that "America has lefties but no left." Lefties haven't laid the groundwork necessary (by way of a daily, grassroots struggle between elections) for systemic change, so Sanders would be stymied. It's not enough to just wait around for the presidential election cycle and then push for the most progressive candidate to become the nominee. A lot of work must be done between elections. Because it's not even about the individuals so much as it is about systems. A Sanders Administration would end up compromising (a *lot*) or it would get nothing done. That's assuming Sanders could even get elected after the opposition plays video of him over and over and over again referring to himself as a socialist. Because, again, lefties/leftists (or whatever term you prefer) haven't laid the groundwork necessary to challenge false perceptions of what "socialism" is and means.

(718 posts)Well, what I hear when they talk is more like:
Hillary's platform: Let's work together to build a plane so that we can fly!
Bernard's platform: Let flap our arms and fly!
Hillary's response: We need some kind of a vehicle to fly
Bernard's response: My esteemed opponent, is saying that we cannot fly! Well, I am here to tell her, We can fly!
I do however, respect that you hear and see something different. But me? I see a lot of positive messages coming from her. So, each to their own I guess?
