(13,869 posts)Because it was never mentioned in the first hour or so of coverage. A small group was shown chanting that later and all of a sudden -- it becomes a Bernie protest.

(3,017 posts)My guess is the word spread on this via social media. From what they're saying, it wasn't one big group. It was a lot of small groups that went in through security and then made it clear they were protestors once they were inside. There were a bunch of them, at least a few hundred, and the police were not at all prepared for it. I say good for them!

(1,890 posts)I read something on Huffpo where they said the designated spot for protesters was right outside the pavilion. If that's true who was responsible for positioning the protesters that close? As we all know police and politicians have been keeping protesters as far away as possible from where they want to protest. We've all complained about it. So if this is true, why were the protesters so close and who put them there? I hope we find out.

(643 posts)I can't stand Trump and the awful things that he promotes. He is a dangerous man. But what about free speech? The protesters want to have a voice but they are making their point by drowning out another's voice. I'd rather that we take the high road and protest outside the event, hold large rallies, etc. We certainly don't want to see Trump supporters come to our rallies and try to shut ours down do we?
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Heaven knows the media has been giving him a huge platform for months now while ignoring Bernie.
casperthegm
(643 posts)No question, they bear a great deal of responsibility for the rise of Trump. But it's hypocritical for us to disrupt a rally and force it to shut it down so that we can say what we want to say- while denying them that right. And they will try to use this point against us. I'm sure we don't want to have the same done to us.

(9,086 posts)It's not just a political agenda.
His supporters have a physical agenda that needs to be confronted physically.
The other day one of his supporters sucker punched a protester, a black guy, in the face at one of these rallies.
And that was only the latest in a series of these incidents. Trump and his campaign encourage it.
This is the correct response. Turn out and disrupt. Trump supporters should be met with protest every day and everywhere.
casperthegm
(643 posts)There's no doubt. And we should never back down to that kind of ignorance. But at the same time every voice has a right to be heard. Stupid people still have rights. I believe reason and kindness will win out in the end.
Cheese Sandwich
(9,086 posts)protest and interrupt. It's civil disobedience.
casperthegm
(643 posts)Goodness knows that Trump has given us plenty of material to work with. But Trump protesters can do the same at our rallies. So we show up at each other's rallies and drown each other out? I think there are better ways to approach this than to try and deny freedom of speech.
Cheese Sandwich

(9,385 posts)I don't think another candidate's event should've been shut down. The 1st amendment matters more than "yea for our team". (Remember the neo-Nazi's controversy over the march through Skokie IL, in the 1970's?)
Second, I think the aftermath of this could turn much uglier very easily (don't forget a lot of Trump people are armed). I don't want to see Sanders' rallies shut down, or ongoing hostilities between the two camps. We don't think Trump's supporters are just going to be fine with this, do we?
Third, I'll be very surprised if Bernie condones this.
Fourth, it feels like a set up.
I think it's a miracle a lot of people weren't hurt, and it was a pretty dumb thing to do. Protesting outside would've been better. (Imagine if a concert for 7,000 had been cancelled because of a protest like this -- there would've been people going to the hospital over it for sure. I think we were very lucky here, but I wouldn't count on being that lucky again.)
This is the same strategy only much bigger, as the BLM Two interrupting Sanders' event months ago, which I didn't agree with either.
monicaangela
(1,508 posts)this may be a protest rally organized by Moveon.org
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)of his supporters, which is why you "mostly" see them in the crowd.
I'm not saying all the protestors are Bernie supporters, but they appear to be the largest faction.
monicaangela
(1,508 posts)But no where near even half. Many of these people appear to be from communities around the area that maybe got word there was going to be a protest and decided to go and air their issues. Most of these people, the protesters look very young.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)Bernie has massive support in Chicago, especially among the young of all colors.
Did you not see all the March for Bernie rallies in Chicago the past few weeks? The crowd in those looks just like the crowd here: young, motivated, from all colors and genders and all walks of life.
monicaangela
(1,508 posts)If I see or hear something that makes me believe these are all Bernie supporters I will be as happy as you are about it. But, I don't believe Bernie would want his supporters to interrupt other candidates rallies. And, I would prefer not to give the credit to Bernie supporters until I know that is the case.
Fawke Em
(11,366 posts)I'm sure there were people from other groups there, but nearly all the videos coming across on social media right now show a very large contingency of Bernie supporters.
We all know the M$M would die before they'd give his supporters credit for this. They don't want to have to mention his name.
monicaangela
(1,508 posts)M$M, they wouldn't want anybody to know thousands of Sanders supporters exist. And they wouldn't want anybody to know that Sanders supporters believe in equality and reject racist bigotry.

(16,631 posts)goal? i'm not trying to be rude; it's probably the same as mine and millions: to get Bernie nominated and elected;

(1,508 posts)MoveOn: Trumps Hate-Filled Rhetoric On Notice After Tonights Event
By Jayne Fagan. Friday, March 11 2016
Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, responded to news of the postponement of Donald Trumps rally in Chicago on Friday:
Mr. Trump and the Republican leaders who support him and his hate-filled rhetoric should be on notice after tonights events. These protests are a direct result of the violence that has occurred at Trump rallies and that has been encouraged by Trump himself from the stage. Our country is better than the shameful, dangerous, and bigoted rhetoric that has been the hallmark of the Trump campaign. To all of those who took to the streets of Chicago, we say thank you for standing up and saying enough is enough. To Donald Trump, and the GOP, we say, welcome to the general election. Trump and those who peddle hate and incite violence have no place in our politics and most certainly do not belong in the White House.
