2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumNo Chicago paranoia please!
Trump has called 1/3 of the people in this country rapists, drug dealers, terrorists and scum. Most of the rest of the people also don't like that. (He has also insulted 52% of this country in many other ways.)
Then he wants to go to Chicago? Where this 1/3 is the majority?
Trump's rally was canceled because, unsurprisingly, the crowd who showed up for it were representative of the vast majority of the people of Chicago. They did not "infiltrate," they simply attended. Thousands of them walked in to the arena, just as all of Trump's crowds in other cities walked in - legally and peacefully. Did you think that after what he has done, Trump is going to get an unadulterated crowd of supporters in an arena in downtown Chicago? Really?
This was not Trump's plan or anyone else's. The protests were organized but the people, they just walked on in. It's a political rally, right? Peace!
This is nevertheless a dangerous moment because of the predictable media response. They don't show the arena videos - the center of the whole thing. They don't say what the videos show is obvious: the hall was filled overwhelmingly with people against Trump. Instead the media speak of "thousands of Trump supporters and opponents," as though it was anything of the sort. They speak of riots and chaos. This delegitimizes free assembly. It's true that Trump's crowd has the right to assemble - and everyone else has the right to assemble right next to them.
It's important at this moment not to be paranoid, not to talk trash about the people who expressed themselves as they have the right, not to project the media spin, not to make of this a campaign event. Yeah, a lot of people chanted Bernie because they showed up as supporters - within a large coalition! Spectacular work, friends in Chicago!

(3,263 posts)A spokesman for the Chicago Police Department says the agency never recommended that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump cancel his campaign rally in the city.
CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tells The Associated Press that the department never told the Trump campaign there was a security threat at the University of Illinois at Chicago venue. He said the department had sufficient manpower on the scene to handle any situation.
Guglielmi says the university's police department also did not recommend that Trump call off the event. He says the decision was made "independently" by the campaign.
Trump cancelled the rally in Chicago due to what organizers said were safety concerns after protesters packed into the arena where it was to take place.

But hey I'm sure the way the protestors looked and dressed seemed dangerous to the Trump campaign

(24,979 posts)He understood who was the majority in the arena, so he canceled it. The people inside the arena are the ones who stopped it.

(53,469 posts)Way to parse words. Hate to tell you in the instance you cited, those two words me the same thing.
And by the way, why are you defending Trump? Are you a supporter of his?

(24,979 posts)Support Trump? Excuse me?
The people walked in to the arena until they occupied it. Trump retreated. The words "stopped" and "canceled" have specific meanings. He canceled it, the people in the arena stopped it.
brush
(53,469 posts)He himself said he called it off, stopped it, canceled it, whatever word you want to use.
Trump did it himself.

(24,979 posts)Now who's defending Trump?
Watch the videos from the arena if you haven't. It becomes clear enough.

(53,469 posts)Apparently you have seen the interview of him saying he called it off.
And reporting what he said is not defending him, it's just winning the argument about you parsing words.

(12,685 posts)orchestrated to think that might be the case vs something organically developing hardly fits the definition of paranoia (especially when you see some narratives pushed so hard and so fast and you see how they can be used to benefit certain parties).

(12,685 posts)ulterior motive or is this truly an organic occurrence?
Healthy skepticism is a good thing to have especially when things have a feel of things that happened earlier in the primary season.
