http://www.commondreams.org/news/2016/03/12/sanders-accepts-challenge-kill-tpp-if-elected-nothing-clinton-so-farTalking trade policy in Ohio, Sanders also picks up key endorsement from Congresswomen Marcy Kaptur
Accepting a challenge and passing it on ahead of primary voting in Ohio and elsewhere on Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders vowed that if elected president he would refuse to present the contoversial TransPacific Partnership (TPP) agreement to Congress and asked his rival Hillary Clinton to join him in that pledge.
America could have no stronger Democratic leader for jobs in America, for fair trade and for economic progress for all, not just the privileged few, than Bernie Sanders." Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio)
As he spoke about trade policy and other key issues to a packed indoor stadium in Toledo on Friday night, Sanders told the crowd that if voters turn out in the manner they did recently in Michigan, his campaign will continue to surprise pollsters and the establishment media pundits who have continually downplayed the seriousness of his campaign and its supporters.

(2,950 posts)From an interview with economist Michael Hudson (emphasis added):

. . .The cover story pretends to be about trade, but the real agenda is to force privatization and disable government regulation. This reverses what was central to the whole Progressive Era. For the last 300 years, the assumption of Europe and North America was that you were going to have a mixed economy, with governments investing in infrastructure, roads and other transportation, communications, water and sewer systems, gas and electricity. The role of government infrastructure was to provide these basic needs at minimum cost in order to promote a low-cost, competitive economy. Thats how America got rich. Thats how Germany industrialized and how the rest of Europe did. But the aim of the Trans-Pacific Partnership is to reverse and privatize public investment. Its ideology is that the economy should be owned and operated by private owners, private enterprise, whose aim is short-term profit.
There are a number of related aims: to nullify environmental protection regulations that cost money, to nullify protection of labor, and to nullify attempts to tax natural resources or economic rent. The idea is to turn roads and the transport system into toll roads, which will be owned by foreigners and run at a high charge. The Internet and the water system will be sold off and made into toll systems, to charge for their services and for other basic needs. This will impose a neo-feudal rentier economy throughout the world as the finance, industrial and real estate (FIRE) sector takes over the government sector.
I think you could say that at the broadest level, the idea is to roll back the Enlightenment and restore feudalism. That may sound like an extreme statement, but people dont realize how radical the TPPs investment agreements are. For instance, when Australia raised the charges on cigarettes and included health warnings on the packs, Philip Morris sued, insisting that Australia pay it what Philip Morris would have made if people would have continued to smoke and get cancer at the existing rate. . .

(3,687 posts)over America? They prefer having Americans (their friends and children and maybe even themselves) competing with 50 cent per hour workers in other countries. They prefer having Corporate tribunals in other countries making decision about what THEY can and cannot do in their own towns.
Interesting.

(168 posts)Bernie has pointed out Clinton's statements of support for the companies in India bringing contract H-1b employees to the USA and Michigan. He also should say this is why we need to see what she told Goldman-Sachs for the $675,000. How much support did she give them? After all, Goldman-Sachs probably tax deducted the "expense" and therefore we have standing to ask what did we get for either paying more taxes or getting less services as a result of the deduction.
Also, she is "currently" against TPP. However the US Chamber of Commerce has put out a message to it's membership that after the election, they are sure she will find reasons to be "currently" in favor of TPP

Also, say goodbye to minimum wage increases by State and Local governments. All a corporation will do is declare that a raise in minimum wages will adversely effect their profits. How many State and Local governments can afford such a fight by corporations using the TPP ISDS dispute resolution process designed by and for multi-national corporations? You will now have corporations able to use this dispute resolution process to sue all levels and forms of governments. Does this sound like giving up governmental sovereignty for corporate profits? Follow the money.....

(1,377 posts)It is a Saturday and polls are hard to run on Sat. Please wait to Monday at least to get her views on this. Plus her staff has to find a new polling place because last one found 75% of Americans found Nancy Reagan was a hero of LGBT/AIDS movement. And this was a new pollster place after the ones in Michigan failed badly.

Sander's has been saying from day one that he wants to re-open these "trade deals", his principles have not budged on iota on this issue.
At one time I can remeber that it was the "Its the economy stupid" from the past Clinton(s) team-------------apparently its been lost.................
