2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI am already missing President Obama
and he has the year to finish out in his presidency.. Just listening to Donald Trump "who will be the republican nominee if they cannot flush him out at their convention" threaten to have his people riot if he does not get the nod.. makes me appreciate even more the grace and patience and good leadership President Obama has brought to this office..
Thank GOD for Hillary and Bernie.. they are the only people standing between us and the reign of the Trumpster..

(68,868 posts)Bush should have had to run for reelection on his record in 2008, or slink away in shame without a term limit excuse.
And Obama would destroy Trump or Cruz in 2016.

(417 posts)There are few humans alive who could have endured what that man has. It feels totally selfish to wish he would/could stick around, but man, who could meet the standard he has set for that office? Not to mention what his family-alive AND dead- have endured. We've been privileged to have him there, indeed

(1,065 posts)... he has a very long list of remarkable achievements that he accomplished against constant political headwinds.
And, it is all but certain that we will not see as cool a POTUS again in our lifetimes.

(36,392 posts)Most pessimistic early predictions, the European counterpart to TPP might be even worse, the middle east is a disaster with no end in sight, and we have no path to a modern healthcare system. So while it's true that things will probably be worse before they get better, we should also confront reality.
I think the party may still be able to save itself, but not unless we can adopt some actual principles in place of hero worship.
Just MHO of course.

(22,875 posts)And President Obama hauled it out of the ashes almost single handedly.. We were bleeding jobs.. our housing market had totally fallen apart.. We were up to our ears in Iraq.. Millions were without any access to health care.. just for a start.. What he was able to accomplish was amazing.. the next President will be starting from a much better base to move us forward..

(12,081 posts)cutting social services every time it is time to negotiate a budget deal. Who will pay for the next 2008 financial collapse? because it will happen again. Which social service program will be cut during the next budget deal? How many more jobs will be sent over seas because of the TPP? How will we pay for the $400 billion corporate tax forgiveness bill? We are slowly bleeding to death.

Yeah, things are great Barack. That's why so many voters are disgusted with both political parties.

(1,048 posts)You don't understand how nostalgic I am already becoming thinking about President Obama. No he has not been as progressive on some issues as I would've liked him to be. But history will show that he navigated this country well through economic hardship (even though it hasn't helped everyone) and pushed forward an agenda that put us in a much better position than had McCain or Romney won. As a Black/Latino gay man I will never forget voting for him on election day in 2008 and literally sobbing in my car for about 15 minutes before I could pull off; not for him, but thinking of my older relatives and all of those who fought and died for Civil Rights, and those who never thought they would live to see the day that a Black man was elected to President of the United States. It was so important for young Black girls coming up to see Michelle Obama as First Lady, to be such a positive role model for them. Watching Sasha and Malia grow before our very eyes has also been amazing. Its been great. I wish he could run again. I will miss so much about him.

(39,370 posts)He made the most of a very difficult eight years. I have my quibbles, but he kept the White House in civilized, progressive hands and really showed his stuff these last couple of years with the Cuba and Iran openings. His pick of Garland today was the best way to put a spotlight on mindless Republican intransigence. Whether the country gets it or not, he is a great President. To the extent that the opportunity he offered America wasn't fully realized, a certain faction is to blame, not Obama.
