2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe DNC created super-delegates. Bernie using the rules to his advantage is just good politics.
Bernie is politician, not a saint. Saints don't get elected. Having a President Sanders is more important to our future then the nomination process. Universal healthcare, Wall Street reform, and a government that is not controlled by billionaires is more important than whether or not the super-delegates over rule the pledged delegates.
So now that the super-delegates may be Sanders' only chance at the nomination, his supporters are embracing the process, after months spent hollering about how they were undemocratic?

(18,402 posts)as "party elites" and "unfair." And the other candidate should not be criticized for having super delegates supporting her. In other words, don't embrace them as evil when the other candidate has them in her corner, and as simple politics when you want them as your candidate's last restor. What's good for the gander is equally good for the goose ...

(1,019 posts)Not votes, not state wins, not delegates, but "momentum."
How is Sanders co-signing this stuff? Or worse, is he somehow not aware of it?

(13,417 posts)There is no difference between what you're saying and advocating for presidential electors to vote for the opposing candidate in the GE despite how their state voted. Changing the rules mid-game because you don't like the perceived outcome is never a good strategy.

(5,217 posts)It doesn't matter which group of voters it affects. I don't judge the morality of a situation differently when I find I am on the other side of the fence. If it's wrong then it is wrong.
The party should not be called Democratic if the leadership feels that the will of the voters is just window dressing but not really too important. I think it is a crap system which should be scrapped and would be something I would expect in Saudi Arabia or Uzbekistan.
That being said, camp weathervane has lied, cheated, smeared, and used elites in the party and the media to tilt the playing field and screw Bernie out of a fair competition. If Bernie were to lose after a fair balanced fight that would be one thing.
But given the whole "politics ain't bean bag" justification for Hillary's dirty tricks he should apply the golden rule and do to them whatever they intend to do to him.
They are going to cheat their asses off, and he needs to document and draw public attention to every questionable and odd occurrence, and call them out on it.

(11,243 posts)It's ok to compromise and make politically expedient choices, but ONLY if you are Bernie Sanders. Hillary Clinton may not, under ANY circumstances, change her mind or make political compromises because she is a third-way shill from CAMP WEATHERVANE!!11!!!!

(1,890 posts)I still hate having super-delegates. I hate even more that the media has used them to fool low information voters into thinking Hillary has a bigger lead than she does. We all know that super-delegates (at least the elected ones..not lobbyists) will switch to match the candidate who has the most delegates elected by the voters. If they didn't our nominee would get trounced in the November election.

(146,288 posts)One week, a guy hates superdelegates. The next week they're potentially useful. Whatever works, I guess.
Here's a hint, though: Those superdelegates are experienced politicians. They know nonsense when they hear it. Good luck with that, folks...
bobbobbins01
(1,681 posts)But you're saying the super delegates are insiders and they won't let an outsider in their club, and you don't seem to have a problem with that, even though it is incredibly anti-democratic.
MineralMan
(146,288 posts)If i were I would have written that. I said that those superdelegates are smart, experienced politicians who know what they are doing. Just like Bernie, they understand very well how this all works. Bernie has amateurs working for his campaign. They are the ones putting this forward. Bernie knows it will not work, I guarantee.
Please don't put words in my mouth. I say exactly what I mean to say.

(1,019 posts)Devine, who has lost 4 presidential campaigns prior to this one, is now floating the idea of trying to get Clinton's pledged delegates to vote against the way the people of their state voted. Clinton made the same argument back in 2008, but it was recognized then as a sign of desperation, and it's really the same thing this time around.
Clinton is running Obama's 2008 campaign, while Bernie is running Clinton's. We already know how this turns out.

(11,243 posts)with ties to the party and super delegates. I was mad as hell that she tried to pull that, but fearful that she could pull it off too. The idea that they would jump for Sanders without the popular vote is laughable. What possible incentive cold they have to do that?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)We should all be ready to raise hell with these delegates. They represent us and it is our duty to make sure they vote correctly.
Anyone saying otherwise is in favor of dictators.
Then at the convention look for challenges to many many of the other delegates so that some of them do not cave to dictators.
Democracy is a good thing.

(13,974 posts)I would not be in favor of either candidate stealing the nomination by Super Delegates. The SD's have an ethical obligation to support whomever has the most pledged delegates or majority pop. vote, be it Clinton or Sanders.
