Related: About this forumLooks like Labor Secretary Tom Perez is on Hillary's short list
for VP:
During an interview Friday morning with CNN's Chris Cuomo on "New Day," the labor secretary was pressed repeatedly about whether he would consider the idea of joining the Democratic frontrunner's ticket in the event she becomes the party's nominee.
I tell you what I consider every day, and thats I got 309 days left till the weekend and every single day Im out there trying to make sure we build shared prosperity," Perez answered. "That is my singular focus in this job. This is an unmitigated privilege to be able to help people get back on their feet and help businesses grow and thats my focus.
Seeking an opening, Cuomo went for it, asking if his counting the days until the end of his term represented looking beyond to another opportunity.
Well as Muhammad Ali said, you dont count the days, you make the days count. And those 309 days left, thats exactly what were trying to do is make these days count," Perez said.

(399 posts)the issues Bernie holds most dear. I live in Montgomery Cty Md and have followed his career, he has always fought against inequality. I still haven't given up on Bernie but if it's Hillary as the nominee I would feel comfortable with Perez as the VP. He can be the conscience in the oval office - God knows he'll be sorely needed.

(3,089 posts)Perez oversaw the division responsible of the implementation, and training of local enforcement in response of the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act;[75] including overseeing the first hate crime conviction under the law, in the racially motivated murder of James Craig Anderson.[76] Perez endorsed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in 2009, citing it one of his "top priorities,"[77] and at his first testimony after being confirmed as Assistant Attorney General, he said that "LGBT individuals not being currently protected against discrimination in the workplace is perhaps one of the most gaping holes in our nations civil rights laws."[78]
In January 2007, newly elected Governor Martin O'Malley selected Perez to run the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.[49]
In that role, Perez led efforts to target Maryland companies who were engaging in workplace fraud; imposing new restrictions on the employee misclassification as independent contractors.[50] He helped with the implementation of H.R. 1590, the Workplace Fraud Act of 2009, imposing penalties for employers who falsely classify their employees as independent contractors; primarily leading to tax evasion by the employers, and the denial of worker protections and health insurance benefits to employees.[51] In May 2009, Governor O'Malley signed the Workplace Fraud Act, with Perez saying that the act would "ensure that employers who attempt to cheat the system, their workers and their competitors, will pay a steep price for their actions."[52]

After then-Governor Robert Ehrlich vetoed an attempt to implement a living wage law in Maryland in 2004,[53] Perez helped lead the reintroduction of a similar bill in 2007.[54] After the bill passed and was signed by Governor O'Malley, Perez announced new provisions for out of state contractors and subcontractors doing business in Maryland, subjecting them to the same standards as in state businesses.[55]
