The Scorpion and the Frog

Last edited Sat Mar 19, 2016, 02:01 PM - Edit history (1)

A fable:

One day, a scorpion looked around at the mountain where she lived and decided that she wanted a change. So she set out on a journey through the forests and hills. She climbed over rocks and under vines and kept going until she reached a river.

The river was wide and swift, and the scorpion stopped to reconsider the situation. She couldn't see any way across, so she ran upriver and then checked downriver, all the while thinking that she might have to turn back.

Suddenly, she saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other side of the river. She decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.

"Hellooo Mr. Frog!" called the scorpion across the water, "Would you be so kind as to give me a ride on your back across the river?"

"Well now, Ms. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly.

"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!"

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"

"This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"

"Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog.

"Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, her sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove her stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

I've heard DUers ask that if Hillary is so confident of winning, why is she running such a sleazy campaign?

As the scorpion said - "I could not help myself. It is my nature."

2. Well, not just outperforming Sanders, but defaming him,

does amp the pressure on the Attorney General to make sure Clinton is unencumbered in her endeavor to become our next President. So nature might be moot.

Comments like this. Does Sanders have lots of big, ambitious goals? Yes. Do his supporters really believe that there is no doubt that he can deliver on all of them? No. But HRC supporters believe us to be naive and falling for the "free stuff" promises.

Here's the truth, if you are interested; We know that it will be difficult, maybe impossible to achieve all of the things that Bernie is talking about. But we appreciate the fact that he wants to at least try. To fight for us. Healthcare for all? Thank you for fighting for us. College for all? Thank you, as we recognize that a college educated society is one that benefits everyone. Reinstating Glass Steagall? Thank you for standing up to the banks and Wall Street. Succeed or fail, at least we have a candidate who is willing to try and stands up to Wall Street and corporate America, rather than cozies up to them.

You have no problem smacking people but play the victim when you're smacked back.

I'm just explaining to you why we support Bernie. I don't see a victim card played here. I'm sorry if your feelings are hurt by my explanation.

See how childish it sounds when you go back and forth like that?

Now, I know this is a big undertaking for a naive Bernie supporter, but I'm gonna try to list real issues here as to why we support him and not Hillary, not "because so and so is a leader or has experience." Want to do a comparison?

Opposes Citizens United and proves it by not taking outsider money

Doesn't give speeches to Wall Street for hundreds of thousands of dollars each

Voted against Iraq War, as it would lead to instability in the region, ie the rise of ISIS. And he was right.

1% and corporations pay their fair share

Marriage equality from the beginning

For Glass Steagall

Opposed NAFTA

Opposed the TPP (from the start)

Sincere about the environment; opposed Keystone from the start and is against fracking

Sincere about income inequality

Supports healthcare coverage for everyone, expanding upon the ACA

Supports free college for all, as an educated society benefits all
