2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis is Karen Weaver, first female major of Flint
and latest target of Sanders supporters smear campaign:
Karen Williams Weaver[1] is an American politician, clinical psychologist, and small business owner who has been the mayor of Flint, Michigan since November 9, 2015. She succeeded Dayne Walling, whom she defeated in a November 2015 election.[2] She is the first female mayor of the city.[2]
Weaver is a member of the Democratic Party,[3] although local offices in Flint are officially nonpartisan.[4] She is also a member of the United States Conference of Mayors.[5]
Prior to being elected mayor of Flint in 2015, Weaver served on a number of committees in the city, including the Hurley Hospital Board of Managers, Priority Children and the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.[6]
In the mayoral election of November 3, 2015, Weaver received 7,825 votes (55%), defeating Walling, who received 6,061 votes (45%). Weaver took office on November 9, 2015. [2]
Shortly after taking office, she declared an emergency in the city due to the water crisis in the area.[7] She also pushed for a similar declaration by state and federal authorities, which were granted by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder on January 5, and President Barack Obama on January 16, 2016.[8] According to Weaver, this declaration means that the federal government will now be responsible for disaster relief efforts, rather than the state of Michigan, as had been the case before.[7] In her short term as Mayor, Weaver has visited the White House and met President Obama[9] and has testified before the U.S. House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on the water crisis.[10] On February 12, 2016, she fired Flint Police Chief James Tolbert, Fire Chief David Cox, and City Administrator Natasha Henderson.[11] Tolbert said her explanation was, "she wants to make some changes."[12] The city council and state Receivership Transition Advisory Board approved her appointments for their successors (Tim Johnson as police chief and Raymond Barton as fire chief) later that month. [13] On March 24, 2016, Governor Snyder appointed Mayor Weaver to an eight year term on the Michigan Economic Development Corporation's executive committee.[14]

(42,862 posts)... it's so obvious that it doesn't actually help Bernie, so the only other possible explanation is that they just want the personal satisfaction of striking back and expressing their anger. It accomplishes absolutely nothing positive. No changes or forward movement. It's just a great big "fuck you" shouted out to anyone who doesn't agree.
In my opinion it's not a very mature response. You'd think that people who are (supposedly) old enough to vote would be able to handle disappointment and disagreement in an adult-like manner. It's a temper tantrum and it's ineffective. It's the type of behavior that I'd expect from the extremists on the other side, but not from actual Democrats.
I guess this is the "new normal" ... it's a shame.

She's being accused of taking bribes.

(24,979 posts)It's wrong to say Weaver was directly paid, since she was not.
The facts should be stated as given: Pritzker foundation donated $500,000 to a public-private program developed by the mayor and Chelsea Clinton and called Flint WaterWorks. No doubt this was a factor in the mayor's support, and obviously a political as well as a charity move. I hope the initiative does good for the people. Maybe the mayor would have supported Clinton regardless.
These are the kind of things that should be known and said without undue rhetoric like we see in that blog post.
It's wrong if you try to generalize this into an attack on Sanders supporters, who may not even know about the program in the first place, let alone that some blogger wrote up a report about it in a counterproductive way. That part's on you.

(47,803 posts)it's not a "smear" to point out influence peddling and quid pro qus for political purposes.
If the Clinton's were all that concerned about Flint all of a sudden, they could have quietly set up a program to help out without jumping up and down and saying "me,me,me, see how much I care?"

(8,541 posts)I'll be the first to admit that I really didn't know anything about this mayor so I appreciate the mini bio. Very impressive!
That said, it's not easy to overlook the fact that a contribution of $500k was made to a newly created organization controlled by Karen Weaver and Chelsea Clinton. To be honest. The fact that Chelsea has anything to do with this bugs me more than anything. It just seems like resume filler for later use.
I'll be the first to say that this isn't bribery. It's how the game is played and it's perfectly legal as they make the rules.
