2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy heart's for Hillary, but my brain is for Sanders. Others feel this way?
What a difficult race!
There's something I like about Hillary. Boy, is she tough. She played the game of politics at its most vicious levels and despite the drawback of being a woman, she prevailed. It's really hard to imagine anyone stronger than her. She plays tough, and she plays dirty. If anyone's going to make something happen in Washington, Hillary can!
But, then there's Bernie. He's using all the right arguments to inspire the millennials to become a wonderful gift to the future. He is a man with high ethics and a clear and consistent vision. And behind him is a movement that, if it can get him elected, will help him make things happen.
How do you decide? I'm with Bernie, my husband's with Hillary, and there's nothing we disagree on.

(11,605 posts)My heart was with Bernie but I was afraid he was just too liberal to get elected.
However, as time has gone on I have come to believe he is actually a stronger candidate for us than Hillary. Many people who don't agree with him still respect him, and might even vote for him if Trump is the GOP nominee.

(484 posts)How can your heart be with a person who voted to allow the use of cluster bombs on civilian populations ?
Voted with Republicans no less.

(5,636 posts)What she did was make herself to possibly become the worst woman president despite being up against an overwhelmingly powerful and vicious male establishment. She stood up the biggest bullies there are, but not in the way you wanted her to. I agree with that. But, at least she prevailed. What an underdog she must have been in those vaunted halls where only men sat.

(29,192 posts)Plus, to me, ethics *really* matters and in this election that is such a clear differentiator. Even beyond Bernie's good ideas is a constantly employed, well-tuned moral compass.

(107,741 posts)I started undecided but two factors made me choose Hillary.
After watching the second debate I thought Bernie looked a bit frail. Isn't he about 74? If elected I doubt he'd serve more than one term. I'd definitely be looking at who his running mate is.
The export-import bank. Sanders is the only Democrat to vote against this. He claims it's Boeing's bank? Bullshit.
The bank allows us to be competitive on the foreign market. It actually makes money for the tax payers, $675 million last year.
While Sanders is correct that the game is rigged against the average person I'm not sure he knows enough about economics to create the proper reforms
If Bernie gets the nomination on the other hand I'll vote for him. Either he and Hillary are better than anyone on the GOP side.

(9,704 posts)but I felt INSPIRED by Obama. I was so torn though. I remember I was still trying to decide who to vote for on election day. In the end, I pulled the lever for Obama. (My three children were in the booth, and they all held onto the lever and pulled it with me. My kindergarten daughter was not very happy that I wouldn't vote for "the girl"; but she left smiling anyway after being given an "I Voted" sticker, which she wore proudly to kindergarten. My oldest child just turned 18, registered last week, and will vote for Bernie in the near future.)
I have always loved Bernie. As soon as he got into the race, I knew he'd be the one for me. I saw him speak last summer in South Carolina while I was there on vacation, and felt even more certain. After the first debate, I felt proud to be a democrat. I didn't think Bernie would be able to win, but I knew we'd be in good hands with Hillary.
Once again, I saw a capable woman, but I was INSPIRED by Bernie.
Things have changed since then. I am very worried that she will be unable to win the general. Most people are so Clinton scandal weary, and although most Clinton supporters only see it as a right-wing smear job, the FBI investigation could tank her chances very quickly. I also do not trust her anymore. She has flipped and flopped in so many ways that I do not respect her anymore. If she is elected, the status quo will continue, and America will be embroiled in war. And finally, with Time Warner Cable as her 8th top donor, I believe we will lose net neutrality. I cannot vote for her.
Bernie would bring change. The kind of change our democracy so badly needs.
