MSNBC, just now.

(50,130 posts)The conversation (sans Ari, who is from Seattle) was running very against Bernie's chances.
Then Howard Dean (who has been getting blistered by twitter lately) remembered that the voters still have a voice, and said the above.

(1,377 posts)I know for a fact I would do same thing he did if I was offered the millions a year he was. That why I don't understand Clinton supporters who think money does not effect the elected people. Bullshit there are very few people that would turn it down. Only people who are not living on scraps would think that because they live a good life.

(4,775 posts)so IMHO he deserves all the criticism he gets. He lies about being a lobbyist, he was confronted with how can he as a superdelegate cast his vote for Hillary when the state he is a superdelegate from voted overwhelmingly for Sanders (he said his vote would be for the good of the country, an arrogant statement that meant his biased an well-compensated opinion was more valid than that of the voters in his own state). Done with Howard Dean.

Entire institutions and conventionalities will have been shattered and exposed, left begging for respect or attention when their disservices become clear.

(4,552 posts)then.
People do change when offered big money.
We all think it won't change us, but it does.
So, best thing to do is avoid it, I guess!!
Anyway, we are supporting Bernie now, and that is the important thing to focus on.
A little bird told me he's the natural choice!!

(23,156 posts)Dean to decide that as a super delegate from Vermont, he really should be supporting the candidate the majority of his state supports.

(2,145 posts)He's been constantly for Hillary. I think in 2004 he actually tried to be Bernie but people weren't ready for it yet. Not saying he really is a Bernie but am saying he certainly wasn't establishment. I delegated for Kucinich and Kerry was establishment. Dean fell somewhere between. That's why establishment and media went after the scream. Can't have Dean. So now he's all in establishment.

(23,156 posts)I was a gung-ho Deaniac in 2004, met him at several events, and a couple of times a year or so later at Democratic Party stuff. I thought highly of him. He was quite approachable.
The only thing I will hold on to for his eventually switching to Bernie is that historically the super delegates go with the person who has enough regular delegates for the nomination. And of course, the media is confusing everything by constantly including the supers who have already announced for Hillary, although I believe that a handful have already switched to Bernie.

(2,145 posts)Look like a pretty flip-flop if he changes now. Does he have the courage? He'll get a lot of flack and probably black-balled by the establishment.

(59,501 posts)As to being "Bernie" in 2004, that was not at all who Dean ever was. In fact, at a Burlington Democratic event, he spoke of the election where Bernie first won as mayor. The context was in introducing the current mayor of Burlington, noting that he was the first Democrat since Bernie won. All the mayors were independents of progressives. This was before Dean was in elected office. He said that he first realized Bernie could win when his mailman said he was for him. Dean then said, that while he did not vote for him, his wife did.
Dean in 2004, took advantage of not having had to cast a vote on the IWR resolution or defend comments in 2002 that were somewhat hawkish. The scream did not destroy his campaign - blame Trippi for going very negative towards Gephardt - resulting in nasty ads on both sides. This meant that - on the night of the scream - he got 18% of the vote versus Kerry getting 38% - in a race that he and Gephardt were seen as likely to win.
In NH, Dean had lost support to Clark, but in the weeks before Iowa, Clark imploded and his supporters mostly went to undecided or Kerry, not Dean. When Kerry won Iowa, he got the momentum and most of the undecided, more of Clark's supporters and likely many of the Gephardt people went to him. Dean's numbers did not tank, they just did not increase.
Then, thanks to Trippi, Dean had spent a fantastic amount of money in NH and Iowa and was low on money. He opted to take a huge risk - he opted NOT to compete in the upcoming contests in SC, ND, AZ, NM, DE, MO, and OK, because they were not likely wins for a new Englander. Now, had Edwards won all of them, Dean could have come back. He could have fought Edwards as the most pro war. The assumption being he could stop Kerry, then fight Edwards. However, Kerry won 5 of the 7.
That said, Dean was a very good DNC head and that might be the place that he fits best. That and as a young person becoming active he fought for the Burlington bike path - which is great.

(2,145 posts)at the time, most of us saw Dean as more liberal. Your post doesn't really show Dean as less liberal . . . so I'm not sure how to think. So I won't disagree since there is nothing there to disagree with. I'm always curious about Trippi as he appears frequenly on Fox.

(2,145 posts)but once these people get to MSNBC, they cannot show support for any candidate but the establishment and Ari went right along with it. I've turned him off more than once before switching to CNN primarily. Just couldn't take any more. Esp. when I saw trusted analysts and journalists like Berman and Alter going commercial. I'll bet money Chris Hayes would be a Bernie guy if he weren't on MSNBC. He's pretty close with Sam Seder and we all know where Sam lies. The paychecks make a big difference and Ari is right up there with them.
