I went to high school there in the mid sixties, I was practically the only hapa-haoli of quite a large student population at Roosevelt High and Kaimuki High. Unless they consider Asians as "white", there were a huge number of Japanese students, Chinese to a lesser degree.

Visited there in the 90's didn't seem that white to me, but then I was hanging with family on the homestead so "i might have missed it"

I lived in Papakolea (just above PunchBowl, Hawaiian Homestead) I was the only "white" girl there, so yeah being a minority during my teens was a real eye opening education.

You could probably imagine how it important was for survival to learn to speak like a native well enough to pass as a "fair skinned portague" (portuguese) which was considered acceptable and not a haoli, which was actually dangerous due to deep hatred.

Very very educational indeed.

It compltely shaped my world view from a very early age, and learned the devastation of U.S. Imperialism, military corruption and Racism among other things.
