Clinton Strategist: We Wont Do Any More Debates Unless Bernie Sanders Changes His Tone
by Alex Griswold | 1:34 pm, March 28th, 2016
VIDEO @ link~
Hillary Clinton chief strategist Joel Benenson said on CNN Monday that they would refuse to schedule any further debates with Bernie Sanders unless his campaign changed its tone.
The Clinton campaign agreed to do four additional debates back in January. But despite their agreement with the Sanders camp, no future Democratic debates were ever scheduled and the candidates are not slated to meet again.
Bernie Sanders wants a debate here {in New York} before the April primary, host Kate Bolduan noted. Are you going to agree to it?
But Benenson changed the subject: I think what was notable this weekend wasnt so much that, but in my mind the Washington Post story with his own campaign talking about how theyre poll-testing more negative attacks on Hillary Clinton.
snip//
That doesnt have anything to do with a debate, Bolduan insisted again. Why not debate?
The debates have been very good, but Senator Sanders doesnt get to decide when we debate, particularly when hes running a very negative campaign against us. Lets see if he goes back to the kind of tone he said he was going to set early on. If he does that, then well talk about debates, but were not going to talk about it Benenson said.
Watch above, via CNN.

But she is a rather weak front runner. I know that is what the Sanders campaign said today, but I consider her, and have been on record, as saying that the Dems are about to nominate the weakest candidate they have nominated in decades. I was thinking Mondale, somebody went and corrected me and said McGovern.
For the record, just due to the nature of this cycle, I consider Sanders just slightly stronger when all is said and done.
If you bothered understanding Trumpism, you would understand why I am typing this. But I am not enamored with a candidate, you are. And if you believe Sanders has been nasty to her... well, it will be a hoot to watch you guys. I gotta get my entertainment in this tragedy somewhere.

Last time I correctly observed pro Trump attitude I was basically threatened.
There sure are a lot of Bernie supporters here (I am too but I am NOTHING like many of you) who make me very uncomfortable, no wonder certain groups are uncomfortable with so many of you.
timmymoff
(1,947 posts)Do you have reading perception problems? I said both behaved in the same manner regarding debates. Meaning, for those of us who respond before we read, Trump whined regarding the way he was treated in debates and threatened to stay out, and it seems Hillary's camp is doing the same. All because they aren't happy with their competitor's tone? Who are they to say what tone to set?

These people lived through 9/11 while HRC just invokes it in a lame attempt to explain away her fealty to Wall Street, and now, she's afraid to debate her opponent in NY.
Guess that NY primary doesn't mean so much to her after all .... or they've already got their pieces in place to flip electronic voting machines their way ... disenfranchise select Democrats ... etc.

CalvinballPro
(1,019 posts)And the person originally making the claim was unable to prove it did. Not sure why that made you think you had to tag in, but I suspect that thinking actually doesn't influence a lot of your decisions.
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...IF the agreement had conditions, then when the Clinton campaign decides not to honor the agreement they will presumably cite those conditions as the basis of their refusal.
Therefore, since the ONLY thing they have mentioned as a reason for not having another debate in April, is his "tone", then one can only surmise that was the condition stipulated.
Of course, no one in their right mind believes there were any conditions at all. So the real reason is, she doesn't think the debate will do her any good, and she doesn't believe she needs to keep her word.
I will grant that so far in this campaign, the Democratic electorate seems to have a very high tolerance for dishonesty -- so she is probably right, it may not hurt her that much to go back on her word.

(10,751 posts)...that a candidate is willing to publicly go back on her word, and presumes she can tell another campaign to watch their "tone".
IF her campaign had not already agreed to two more debates, then yes, she would be free to refuse another debate, based purely on calculations as to whether it is more likely to help her or to hurt her. People like me might not like that, but we also could not accuse her of reneging on anything.
But that is not the case. Her campaign DID ALREADY AGREE to those debates. The May debate is already scheduled. Now she is playing games with the April debate. You just know that she and DWS will try and push it past the NY primary, that is if they end up having it at all. But if they are successful, then...
