A meal at Dennys finally convinced Jane Sanders that her husband should run
...When Bernie Sanders first broached the idea of running for president, Jane Sanders was not initially on board.
First I said, How can you win? Were from a small state, she recalled. I know the issues are important, but isnt there another way for these issues to be discussed? I kept on saying, Cant you write a book? Cant you start an organization? Cant you do a speaking tour? And he kept on saying, Yes, I can do all those things, and its not going to matter at all. Its not going to change the conversation. ...
...What finally sold her on the idea, Jane Sanders said, was a meal at Dennys. Much of the discussion centered on whether to move forward with a presidential bid.
"Im not for it, but whatever you decide, I will be behind you 100 percent, Jane Sanders recalled saying. He was like, If you dont want me to do it, I wont do it. So it was like a stalemate.
A disabled veteran visited the table to thank the senator for helping him get his benefits from years ago. The man told Bernie Sanders that he had changed his life and that would do anything to help him if he ran for president.
I said, I give up. I think you should do it, Jane Sanders said...

Jackie Wilson Said
(4,176 posts)you would not feel the need to make that remark, because you acknowledge that if Bernie wanted to get rich while in public life he could have and he chose not to.
He chose to serve the people.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)elite position. It's been reported his assets are in his wife's name.
He also chose to leave Brooklyn and live in rural Vermont. How is that "serving the people"? There are lots more people in New York.

AND because VT listens to ideas and saw positive results in Burlington, he is able to shine on a national stage for everyone to learn about and appreciate... I hate that my home state would lose him, but what the country gains will be ever so better.
TheCowsCameHome
(40,168 posts)What is wrong with him?
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)different, but he's an elite Senator making tons of money.
questionseverything
(9,651 posts)he is not the 1%
he is a 99er
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)Way above normal.
He's a US Senator.
He's a Presidential candidate.
All far above normal.
choie
(4,111 posts)from corporations, doesn't earn millions of dollars in speaker's fees from banks and corporations and his vision and policies all aim at helping the "common" man. I couldn't give a flying horse's patoot how much he earns for being a senator.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)"Bribes" is an emotional term, so the rest of what you say is also based on emotion. "Bribes" fits your world view, since it's not proven or substantiated.
The fact is that someone making $200,000 per year is in an elite tax bracket. Way above normal.
choie
(4,111 posts)aimed at bettering the lives of the non "elite" is the point.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)It's obvious it's not about "issues".
He had plenty of campaign contributions to hate on her. No need to give him free time just for that.

(28,876 posts)You did. And that discussion deserves perspective.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)But reality is that he earns an elite salary as a Senator. Reality.

Yeah, LMAO!!!! So funny!!

(57,349 posts)The irony of Hillary supporters complaining about Bernie's hard earned salary...
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)How many Senators do you personalize with?
And HIllary doesn't put herself up on her own pedestal like the Bernies do for him. So your analogy doesn't work.
beam me up scottie
(57,349 posts)And the analogy is perfect, you support a 1%er and are upset about Bernie's salary.
Too funny.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)salary. Confused much?
$200,000 per year is way beyond "normal". So what if he eats at Denny's. How phony.
beam me up scottie
(57,349 posts)That's it, I'm done, he makes too much money!
I'm voting for the other candidate!!!
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)$200,000 is an elite salary. It's definitely above "normal."
beam me up scottie

R B Garr
(16,950 posts)and SCANDALOUS and ZOMG.
$200,000 a year is an elite salary. Way beyond normal.
Barack_America
(28,876 posts)He never let any of it get to him. Forget the money, think about the influence and power he has access to. And yet, by all accounts...same old Bernie.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)His ego is very obvious. Very.

(40,168 posts)Give or take......

(11,546 posts)salary. It's middle to upper middle class. In my area a 1000 square foot 2 bdr, 1 bath house is $670K. They all do their own shopping, cooking, cleaning and wipe their babies butts. All NORMAL stuff.
TheCowsCameHome
(40,168 posts)R B Garr
(16,950 posts)She's ahead in the popular vote and delegates, so those talking points don't all matter. Only to the put-Bernie-on-a-pedestal types.
Gwhittey
(1,377 posts)What popular vote? Do you actually know anything about primaries and caucuses? popular vote is not counted except in some states. You could win all popular votes and still lose election same as in GE. please read a bit about how elections work if going to continue this silly stuff.
islandmkl
(5,275 posts)whatever would make you repeat it over and over and think you were making any kind of point?
i guess you just like strolling though the posts...
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)what I said so they can pretend they are discounting the fact that I stated $200,000 is an elite salary. Which it is.
So I'm smart enough to see that most of the responses are just lousy personal attacks disguised as something else. WINK.

(22,340 posts)At the district I teach in in Wisconsin (not in Madison or Milwaukee--rural WI), two teachers that are at the top of the schedule (so about 15 years experience and a Masters) would make almost $150,000. So Bernie makes $50,000 more than two teachers in a small, rural Wisconsin school district. What an elite bastard.

R B Garr
(16,950 posts)Hillary doesn't put herself on a pedestal and claim she's "normal". lol
$200,000 is an elite salary. Way above normal.
Dustlawyer
(10,495 posts)This man has been anything but normal for a Senator since he doesn't take campaign bribes. Is that all you have? Are you trying to say it's as bad as Hillary talking about being "broke" after she and Bill left the White House? Really?
Sure $200 k is more than most Americans make, but waaaay less than all the other Senators, especially a former Senator from NY. If you really have a problem with people saying Bernie is normal since he makes $200 k, you must be apoplectic over a broke Bill and Hillary being paid $200-$250 k a speech, amassing around $135 million from Wall Street and MIC speeches!
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)All I said is that $200,000 per year is way above normal.
This is hilarious.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)You have to take the salary.
Now, you can send an equally-sized check back to the government, and they'll happily cash it. But you're still technically getting paid.
kristopher
(29,798 posts)Then he'd be just like The Party's Leadership.
Speaking fees from Goldman Sachs?
"No, problem, here you are Senator Sanders; and yes, certainly! We'll be sure to "cut it out" hehehe. Happy to have you join the rest of your colleagues, Senator. Very, very happy indeed."

(10,123 posts)that she's too ashamed of to provide the public a transcript.
A little less than $200,000 in Hillary's world buys you a seat at her fundraiser with George Clooney.
THAT is hardly common.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)and leading in delegates, so those talking points only matter with Sanders believers who put him on a pedestal.
It's sort of like the Republican "Family Values". Bernie puts himself out in the same manner, whereas Hillary doesn't. Making $200,000 per year is an elite salary. It's way above normal.
Jarqui
(10,123 posts)lying,
dirty campaign tricks,
flip-flops,
deceptions,
number of FBI agents & Federal entities investigating her
And those things might catch up to her while we're not too far beyond half way in the primary.
$174,000 isn't in the 1%.
$275,000 for an hour of speaking to Goldman Sachs ($10,000,000/year) is in the top 0.1%
gabeana
(3,166 posts)and a little unhinged, the story and it is nice story of how he and Jane decided to run for the Presidency
and you go off about him being elite because he pulls down a Senators salary
talk bout a non sequitur
so using our logic a "Common" man/woman can never be a senator because of the salary oh the logic ROFL
thanks for that
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)what I said untrue. And this is a prime example of what my responses are about.
I just said that $200;000 is an elite salary and way above normal. Reality shows that it is you upset with that simple fact. I said nothing negative about it or him.
keep it coming please

(28,876 posts)I read this story when it first came out and it struck me how normal they are. They make their big decisions just as I do with my spouse...we're either both in or it just doesn't happen.
I'd recommend reading the whole story if you have a chance.
