2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDear Bernie: Leave an a High Note
Assuming that Reinish is calling it correctly when he says, "The two m words that matter most in a campaign, math and map, just arent on his side...."
...."Worrisome data bears out that over one-third of Sanders voters when polled have said they will stay home if Bernie isnt the nominee. The candidate himself needs to course-correct on this, and fast. Theres too much at stake.....He also has to emphasize that you arent a progressive, or a fighter, but an infant and a narcissist, if you spitefully stay home in your bathrobe on November 8 in an effort to send a message. If his campaign was about transcendent, transformative ideas and is indeed a movement, he must make the case to his supporters that at the end of the day it doesnt matter whose torch they march under and remove ego from the equation..."

(27,247 posts)Voters in the last 5 of 6 states have overwhelmingly supported Bernie, at least 2-to-1 in all 5 states. And Bernie won every single county in all 3 of the most recent states. Meanwhile, Hillary has the spectre of investigations by various agencies shrouding her candidacy.

(5,942 posts)Now if you could kindly get some of the Revolution Messaging trolls to do the same along with the true Bernie supporters who have gone off the rails into cultdom, we might be able to get back to the days of spirited discourse and a real exchange of ideas and opinions. I too think Reinish is premature in calling for Bernie to back out now, but as Reinish puts it "The stakes have never been higher. There are two choices: unity or Trump." To not vote in the general election simply because your candidate doesn't win the nomination is simply a vote for the other side. Period. Personally, I think Cruz would be even scarier than Trump, and I will vote for the Democratic candidate regardless of who it is. Moreover, I think we do our party a disfavor by denigrating other Dem candidates by using trash we've pulled from Rabid Right Wing sites and worse. Hillary = Hitler? Prostituting Chelsea? I could fill up an entire journal with the crap that's been posted here. Reinish's opinion as a Dem strategist is simply his opinion, and compared to the stuff that gets posted with unfortunate regularity here about Hillary, his piece is about as denigrating as toasted bread in warm milk.

(2,227 posts)Kind like a republicans rationale for voting for Bernie:
I don't like anything he stands for but he is honest and trustworthy.
Dammit Bernie...wants to give me healthcare
Dammit Bernie...wants to make sure my kids can go to college
Dammit Bernie...wants to make the rich pay their fair share and take away corporate welfare.
Dammit Bernie...wants to make sure I get a living wage
Dammit Bernie...wants to give women equal pay and let them control their own bodies
Dammit Bernie...wants to take corporate money out of politics, where do you get your money? oh wait, never mind
Dammit, Dammit, well ok Bernie, I don't agree with that crap but I'll vote for you because
you tell the truth...

(46,179 posts)and the bully brigade you wrote in with.
Bernie cannot "correct" this reality.
He can, and will, support HRC should she win the nomination, which he, and I, are not yet conceding, thank you.
He can't determine the votes of the people supporting his campaign should he not win the nomination. That's democracy. People have a right to determine their own vote, and they will.
Votes aren't owed.
I support Sanders because of his positions and record on issues. Not because I need him to tell me how to vote.
I guess some voters need to be led. I guess I view people who need someone else to do their thinking for them as part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Too much at stake? The establishment thumbs its nose at voters, and then kicks the bullying into gear to try to cow them into submission with terms like "infant," "narcissist," "spite." FUCK THAT. What's at stake is the identity of the Democratic Party, among other things, and some of us will not be going quietly.
I'll be staying at home in my bathrobe on November 8th no matter who I've voted for; I always vote in my bathrobe. I have no worries about reduced polling places or voter suppression in my state.
I'll be voting for the best candidate on my ballot based on positions and record on issues, as I always do. Spite has nothing to do with it.
Remove your own ego from the equation.

(146,286 posts)until after the big states in the Northeast have weighed in. If Hillary wins those with good margins, the pledged delegate count will make it impossible for Bernie to win the nomination. If that happens, then the call for him to stop his campaign will make perfect sense. Once we see results from NY, PA and MD, we'll have a much clearer picture.
Bernie should continue campaigning at least through April.
Avalux
(35,015 posts)Tell me why again? When:
1. Bernie is only trailing 6% in pledged delegates
2. His momentum is on the upswing after 3 blowouts on Saturday
3. Many more states have yet to vote
4. Bernie's close in CA and other upcoming states
5. He's more popular than ever, raising 4 million in a few days
Hillary Inc. would love nothing more than for Bernie to give up. Sorry but it's NOT going to happen.
