2016 Postmortem

After a very good weekend in which fortune fell upon Bernie Sanders like a bird alighting on a podium, you could be forgiven for thinking the Sanders campaign has momentum.
On Saturday, he won Washington states caucus with 72 percent of the vote. He won Hawaiis with 70 percent of the vote. And he won Alaskas with a whopping 82 percent of the vote. This follows victories in Idaho and Utah, where Sanders beat Hillary Clinton with 60-point margins. And if the past is any indication, the Sanders campaign will turn those wins into massive cash donations, fueling his efforts in Wisconsin (which votes next week), New York, and California.
Given his success, his fundraising, and the sheer enthusiasm for his campaign, its easy to look at the past week and believe that Sanders is on the cusp of a new dawnthat soon hell turn a corner toward victory. Dont let anybody tell you we cant win the nomination or win the general election, he told supporters. Were going to do both of those things.
---
None of this is to dismiss Sanders or his support. But at this stage, the primary is static. There are states that favor Sanders, and there are states that favor Clinton. The latter hold more pledged delegates than the former. After Nevada, the Sanders campaign pursued a state-win strategy, designed to score as many states as possible. But they didnt need states; they needed delegates. Now, they face a hill thats almost too steep to climb.

(1,065 posts)... Hillary voters saying they'd absolutely support Bernie should he win the nomination, and what I can only hope is a very vocal minority of Bernie supporters saying they'd never vote for Hillary, and BTW, fuck the Democratic party.
"WooHoo!", indeed.

(2,560 posts)She's left on social issues, that actually don't effect me.
If she wins the nomination, I'll have to switch to the Green Party.... So you're right, although my interpretation is that the Dem party gave the finger to me first.

(1,065 posts)... concern for your fellow countrymen used to be the cornerstone of progressivism.
I guess not so much for Bernie supporters.

(2,560 posts)I hate to break it to you, but the progressive Democrat is not in the lead right now....
Hillarys only concern is for the mega millionaires that bankroll her personal wealth.

(135,425 posts)Sanders victories are impressive, but to repeat myself, you dont win the primary with states; you win it with delegates. And even after Saturday, Sanders trails behind Clinton in pledged delegates awarded through voting. Before Saturday, the former secretary of state led Sanders by 294 pledged delegates. After Saturday, she led by 259. With just under 2,000 pledged delegates left in the contest, Sanders needs 55 percent of remaining delegates to win a majority. If you add superdelegates (Democratic lawmakers and officials) to the total, then Sanders needs 66 percent of remaining delegates to score a majority.

(28,749 posts)I requested that you do not provide a blind link. You provided a blind link.
You are free to do as you will, obviously, but there are many of us who will not click on the link (personally, I am in the habit of looking at the link before reading the snippet).
Agschmid
(28,749 posts)You can always determine the source of the link before you click it, it's easy.

(36,824 posts)Personally, I will not give right-wing sites traffic (as well as certain 'left-wing' sites such as HuffPo).
I am not saying that you would link to a right-wing site (that I do not doubt), but I feel it is a good thing that people can see where their click will take them.

(14,881 posts)I have no idea how, other than click it and see where it's taking me.
I despise blind links. I consider them rude. Usually a deliberate attempt to lure me into a place I'd rather not be. Why else attempt to hide the source?

(14,881 posts)luckily my antique pc is usually so slow that I usually can turn it off before it downloads. Unfortunately now that I'm stuck with firefox it's excrutiatingly slow and takes forever to even show me what it's trying to download.
I still prefer to simply know the source before I click on it. That way, if I doze off while waiting for firefox to tell me what it's trying to download I don't look up from my nap and find myself someplace I don't want to be.
I don't understand people's love affairs with their little blue links. It's more work and time all around.

(20,043 posts)place my cursor over it and at the bottom of my screen the address comes up. I have a Toshiba and I use Firefox--not sure if that makes a difference.
demmiblue
(36,824 posts)you should see the address on the left-hand bottom of your screen.
(even if people know how to do this, they shouldn't have to)
Edit: this is assuming that you are on a desktop/laptop. If you are using a phone/tablet it is more time consuming.

(39,451 posts)We know he has a steep road ahead of him, no one is denying that.
But trying to deny his supporters their right to vote for him when neither candidate has the 2383 delegates needed to become the nominee is extremely dismissive.
Yes, I know, we all know, Hillary is closer than Bernie. But she is not there yet, is she?

(40,416 posts)The most oppressive group on DU, with 768 blocked DUers, even those who will gladly support their candidate in the GE.
But what they really want is ideological purity!! And whatever you do, don't make a light-hearted post about a bird that in no way maligns their candidate.
Birds put the whole group into apoplexy. BAM! Banned.
And they don't even honor their banning message:
You have been blocked from posting in the Hillary Clinton group by <host>. If you believe this is an error, you may contact <host> for more information.
Of course, it is all a lie. The message should read:
You have been blocked from posting in the Hillary Clinton group by <host>. If you believe this is an error, that's too fucking bad. Don't bother PMing the host because we will ignore your appeal. We're the Hillary Clinton group and we just don't fucking care.
Kind fits with the 768 bans, doesn't it. And I will henceforth no longer ignore GD.P posts by Hillary posters.

I avoid it like the plague. It's already a member of my "Full Trash" crew where it belongs. I suggest doing the same.

(40,416 posts)I have had problems with some DUers, less so with groups. But I can easily ignore what I choose. Just because I disagree with one on a specific topic doesn't mean I disagree with them on all topics.
I find DU nearly always entertaining and informative. I really like the former, but one still has to have Sunday morning LOLcats and the great nearly daily toons. I presume that all DUers would agree with those sentiments.
So why trash groups or ignore DUers? It kind of defeats the purpose of DU.
YMMV.
