2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"Gasland"
Josh Fox, the director of the movie "Gasland," will be opening for Bernie Sanders tomorrow in Binghamton, NY.
The issue of hydro-fracking is huge in upstate New York. One of the Democratic Party's candidates favors fracking. She has advocated for it around the world.
Bernie Sanders opposes hydro-fracking. He is on the side of Americans who want to have access to clean water.
Truly, our primary comes down to the choice between a glass of contaminated, or a glass of sparkling clean water.
How in the hell can you be concerned with kids in Flint being poisoned by drinking water in Flint, and being for a process that contaminates children's drinking water?

Many thanks to the Fracktivists of New York State and Josh for standing UP
and a big thanks to Bernie for just saying NO! Not Me, US!

These are the things that... I have to say something that donned on me when that Greenpeace activist confronted Hillary. One little girl tipped a giant. It's like even a small input can have a gigantic result. I always that that was how Rove worked. Just light a match.
These are the things that can alter a race. I get so enthusiastic when I hear about these things.
I'm nervous and upset right now. If I could only tell you the story about how my neighbor lost his 130 acre land that is like a state park. Basically he was fraudulently foreclosed upon, even having paid his mortgage bills, and having proof that he paid! So the new owner has been preparing to log for about a year now. I just got off the phone, having just haggled over a logging yarder toehold line onto my property. I know the guy foreclosed on my friend by cooking accounting books. I know my price was a gouge. And now my heart is pumping a mile a minute, and I feel like a cad. I only mentioned this because I'm still under the influence of adrenaline as I reply. But I also mention it because I don't want to stray too far from what is right. I gouged the guy because of how I feel about him. He's brilliant artist, and a nice guy. I've probably done something I'll regret.
edit- However I got onto this topic I realized why I really wanted to gouge the guy. I want to make it as hard to log as possible. As if I hadn't rambled on enough already. I'm not apologizing.

(2,605 posts)It is silly for Hillary to talk about "safe" drilling.
"A Pennsylvania jury handed down a $4.24 million verdict in a lawsuit centering on water contamination from negligent shale gas drilling in Dimock, PA, a tiny town that made international headlines for its flammable and toxic drinking water.
The defendant in the lawsuit, Cabot Oil and Gas Corp., had strenuously denied that it had caused any harm to the plaintiffs or their drinking water. In 2012, the company reached a settlement with roughly 40 other residents along Carter Road in Dimock, but the terms of that settlement were never made public and included a non-disparagement clause that prevents those who settled from speaking out about their experiences with Cabot.
The verdict, which was reported by the Associated Press, comes as long-awaited vindication for the Hubert and Ely families, who refused to settle in part because they wanted their voices heard, they said at a press conference when the trial began in Scranton on February 22.
The lawsuit stretched on for nearly seven years, and the plaintiffs were at one point forced to represent themselves in court after being unable to find legal counsel following the settlement of the vast majority of the plaintiffs.

(1,754 posts)Even if I agreed with her on every other issue (I don't) I could not support Clinton because of her stance on fracking. This is a huge issue.

(11,945 posts)It destabilizes the earth's crust, causing earthquakes where they never existed before, and it pollutes the site, going down 10,000 feet with non-biodegradable toxic chemicals that remain in the ground and also in the air and atmosphere -- as well as in drinking water.
It is dirty, destructive, and anti-life.
Hillary, as SOS, championed its use around the world. One must ask whether Hillary Clinton values this earth and the life it supports.

(11,945 posts)I found it when looking up a statistic for my previous comment, liked it so much I copied the text portions, and then learned, at the end, that it was produced by Gasland the movie!
I think everyone should look at it. The simple style could be used as a model by children and grandchildren for school projects. As you scroll down a highway and then through the earth, relevant statistics pop up. At the end it has links for your local officials, local organizations, and a suggestion to share on FB.

I copied the statistics and am reproducing them here:
So What is it?
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside.
To the site
Each gas well requires an average of 400 tanker trucks to carry water and supplies to and from the site.
Heavy Load
It takes 1-8 million gallons of water to complete each fracturing job.
Fracturing Site
The water brought in is mixed with sand and chemicals to create fracking fluid. Approximately 40,000 gallons of chemicals are used per fracturing.
Fracking Fluid
Up to 600 chemicals are used in fracking fluid, including known carcinogens and toxins such as
lead
uranium
mercury
ethylene glycol
radium
methanol
hydrochloric acid
formaldehyde
Down 10,000 ft
The fracking fluid is then pressure injected into the ground through a drilled pipeline.
The Math
500,000 active gas wells in the US
X 8 million gallons of water per fracking
X 18 times a well can be fracked
______________________________
72 trillion gallons of water
and
360 billion gallons of chemicals needed to run our current gas wells.
Shale Fracturing
The mixture reaches the end of the well where the high pressure causes the nearby shale rock to crack, creating fissures where natural gas flows into the well.
Contamination
During this process, methane gas and toxic chemicals leach out from the system and contaminate nearby groundwater.
Methane concentrations are 17x higher in drinking-water wells near fracturing sites than in normal wells.
Drinking Water
Contaminated well water is used for drinking water for nearby cities and towns.
There have been over 1,000 documented cases of water contamination next to areas of gas drilling as well as cases of sensory, respiratory, and neurological damage due to ingested contaminated water.
Left Behind
Only 30-50% of the fracturing fluid is recovered, the rest of the toxic fluid is left in the ground and is not biodegradable.
The waste fluid is left in open air pits to evaporate, releasing harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the atmosphere, creating contaminated air, acid rain, and ground level ozone.
In the end, hydraulic fracking produces approximately 300,000 barrels of natural gas a day, but at the price of numerous environmental, safety, and health hazards.
Don't think it's worth it?
Help support the FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act) which would require the energy industry to disclose all chemicals used in fracturing fluid as well as repeal fracking's exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act.

(180 posts)Hillary's response to fracking was absolutely clear. She wouldn't support it if:
1. The locality/state didn't want it. (Although after 2010/2012 elections most states are R-controlled).
2. It wouldn't contaminate water/air. (Which is laughable because this is unavoidable and why the 2005 Energy Act intentionally exempted fracking from all of the oversight pollution standards).
3. Companies engaged in fracking have to disclose the components of their fracking water solutions. (Never mind it would take an act of Congress to accomplish this).
So you see, she was being honest. She supports fracking just as much as her Republican counterparts and conservative Democrats shilling for energy companies and their fund raising money.
If she were any more honest, she would have said...."Let me stand here and take a simple yes/no question and turn it into a 5-minute non-answer so that I dominate the time allocations in this debate. Let's see if Bernie can respond in his 30-second rebuttal timeframe."
The funny things is....Bernie did!!
