2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Clinton mansion in Chappaqua.
Apparently not everyone is up on what kind of homes people own who are greedy for money. "mansion" was sarcastic. The Clintons have higher values.

(3,457 posts)How We Apply Cultured Stone to Your Home
Cultured Stone is a multi-step masonry process of hand-trowelled cementitious material combined with manufactured stone veneer in a design and texture of your choice.

(30,247 posts)I go to PA often to visit friends. Lots of homes have that type of stone masonry. It's common in the Northeast. I've seen it in various Northern states.

(146,286 posts)California, using rounded beach and river stones. In the process, I learned all about that type of masonry from an assortment of books. Turns out that it's not all that easy to pull off, since the stones are rounded on all sides. I finally got the hang of it, and the end result was very nice.
It took me almost a year of driving to places where I could collect suitable rocks and then laying them. Placement is important, and I learned about using wire ties in the mortar to make sure the wall was completely stable. I love learning new skills, and books on stone masonry were a big, bit help, but it wasn't until I actually started working with the materials that I really learned how to do it.
A couple of years after I had finished, a guy in pickup stopped by and asked me who had done the work. I told him that it was me. He asked if he could look more closely, and I said, "sure." Turned out he was a stone mason himself an was curious who had done it. After his look at it he said, "Well, you did a pretty damned good job on it. I might have placed a few stones differently, but it looks good."
I took that as a real compliment. We talked about the process for awhile over a couple of beers, and I discovered that the way I had done the ties was really old fashioned, but still good. He showed me some prefab ties I could have used, and I realized that my book had been written before those existed. Fun.

(30,247 posts)Wow, I'm impressed. I can barely change a light bulb. BTW, some of those houses have matching stone walls around them. Those walls are highly valued and expensive to repair because they are usually quite old.
It looks like you did a great job. Kudos!!!

(11,076 posts)It's OK to have nice things. When one works to oppress the 99, that's not so cool. I'm OK with her having what she wants. My guess is that she and Bill don't spend much time together so they need two places at a minimum.

(11,076 posts)My guess is you didn't step on the backs of the people to buy it. You probably didn't disobey the orders of your boss and continue to be paid for it. Maybe you made a few speeches and a few promises but I guess not but then I don't know you. Frankly, I Don't care what kind or how many houses a person has if they are able to tell truth and act honorably. At the end of the day those things are important to me. I really don't know what the point if the house post was. Do you?

(62,444 posts)This was not an investment property in NYC. It was a top notch residence in Westchester County. And, yeah, sure, there are all kinds of folks in Ossining, but this is not that.
Show me someone with that kind of acreage in Westchester County who is not a 1%er.

(30,247 posts)I have always loved Mar-a-Lago and cringed when Trump bought it (like many others in PB did too). He's has always been a crass nouveau riche. Thankfully, he didn't ruin the main house with the type of tacky décor of his penthouse in NY.

(30,247 posts)It's a 5 bedroom Dutch Colonial. Mar-a-Lago is a true mansion. Along with most of the other homes in Palm Beach.
Here's a short video of Bill showing Oprah the house in 2004. It's a nice home, but more upper middle class than multimillionaire.

LAS14
(13,783 posts)... the Clintons live in relatively modest circumstances, given their income. It was a push back to those posts who accuse Hillary of being in it for the money. The last sentence was edited by me after I saw that people didn't understand how far the residence was from what people in their circumstances might be living in. See response #69.
