Related: About this forumCalifornians Should Reject the Networks Attempts to Minimize Their Votes
The idea that they will declare Hillary the nominee before the polls close in California is BS! We know they have been for her from the beginning, but they should stop working hard to discourage people from voting. I would like to remind everyone in California that NO ONE IS THE NOMINEE until the vote takes place on tne convention floor in July!

(45,251 posts)It's very obvious that big business wants to choose our politicians and knows how to do it.
And effing TPP is not even in effect yet.
If you are not on board with big business brainwashing you while getting richer on large ratings, stop watching.

(3,473 posts)California has minimized its own vote by moving the Primary back to June, when it was in Feb/Mar in 2000, 2004 and 2008 on Super Tuesday. Blaming the Networks for this is crazy talk.

Poor planning? Help me here...

(591 posts)If Hillary doesn't win California, it may not matter what the MSM announces at 5:00 pm PST on June 7. (The press has been wrong before: This could very well turn out to be the 2016 version of "Dewey Beats Truman."
Another point: Six states (not just CA) are holding their presidential primaries next Tuesday, and only one is EST. Doesn't Hillary (should she end up as the Democratic nominee) want to win those other states in the GE, too?

(9,527 posts)It was a compromise free position. It's hard to complain about somebody else isn't willing to have a discussion when what you mean is they aren't willing to take your side.

(12,689 posts)Many California voters will have voted by mail and most of those who will vote after 5 pm are highly unlikely to decide not to vote just because of the what the networks say.

(67,366 posts)at fault. Having grown up in CA plenty of times I heard a race called by east coast media and not once did I turn around and go home instead of voting.

(55,981 posts)Funny, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on the media to influence. And your response is, "you shouldn't be influenced."

(37,748 posts)I pretend people who trust television for absolute truth are victims too... it allows us to frame our narrative in such a way as to be more soothing and palatable to our obvious biases and our emphatic denial of rational thought in this particular instance.
After the election, when it's not convenient to our truths, we can go back to lampooning people who watch television news, but for now, it's the best tactic we have.

(1,048 posts)What does one have to do with the other? No amount of "influence" can prevent me from voting. Perhaps I have a different perspective since my ancestors fought and died for my right to vote and I'm standing in line to vote even if the state has been called for or against my candidate. I never quite understood the absurdity of this.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)my minimum wage workers thank you in advance for helping to suppress the vote on Prop I
For the record, so you are clear, the primary is an afterthought for me. Passing Prop I is critical
By the way, it does have name, it is called the bandwagon effect.
It has been a very well known issue since the 1980 race, and that one led to Congressional hearings.
UMTerp01
(1,048 posts)I would never let something like that affect my vote. I'm voting regardless. Its ashame that others don't feel that way. Like I said...I don't care if the winner had already been called and it was for or against my candidate. I'm voting for everything. But unfortunately yeah these things happen in term of suppressing the vote. So believe me I hear what you are saying. I just find it frustrating that anyone would be influenced by such. But again, I have a different perspective and hold dear my right to vote given that there was a time that my people didn't have the right to. People should have more pride in us being able to vote and have a say in policy.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)And the networks resist it. They should not be able to say a thing until all polling stations are closed. This is the way Germany does it, but then again, they are a mature democracy. Yes, congress should pass a federal law...it will happen in my dreams. It also happens in states with two time zones by the way. It is just to a lesser extent
UMTerp01
(1,048 posts)But unfortunately networks are more concerned with being "the first" than respecting a process as important as voting.

(1,446 posts)accept the fact that your individual vote counts less than in many other places. So we do other things to help encourage our political views. We donate money, we work on phone banks for the early primary states, we support our state progressive candidates.
Residents of each state have different responsibilities in the democratic process. In this case, those of us who support Hillary are thrilled that our votes are not needed to make her the presumptive nominee. It has always been the best case scenario.

(146,262 posts)Freedom of the press is what it is. We have a free press in this country, and the press can do as it pleases.
Each of us, however, can choose whether or not to follow reports in the collective press. That's the reason my suggestion to you. If you don't like it, just ignore it until whatever time you choose.
I don't know about you, but I've never let the news media stop me from voting. My vote is independent of it.
