2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMadam President.
We are a step closer to making that a reality. If certainty is still needed for some, after the polls close in NJ tomorrow, we will have the first female presumptive nominee for POTUS of a major party.
No one will minimize this event for me. No one will steal it. Clinton has worked her ass off for it, has endured attacks no candidate in history has had to endure, and has flat out earned it.
Onward to November. We have a lot of work to do. Polling shows we are at a great starting point but this is going to be a nasty fight. I never thought electing the first woman as President would look like all of the elections before. The white male is getting increasingly desperate as POC and women are asserting their will like never before. We are taking part in the process and demanding quality representation. We have spoken and will not be quiet.

(58,785 posts)no doubt be surprised to realize how much unexamined and right-wing-manufactured opposition has its base in her gender.
But while we're on the subject, let's remember that, for all the heroic work of some women of the suffrage era and in spite of many women strongly opposing the right to vote, it was men, and only men, who voted to extend it to women anyway.
The election of a woman to the presidency is an advance welcomed by most Americans, but for those on the right and others affected by the Kool-Aid the right-wing character assassins have been pouring for over 30 years, maybe just not this woman. Just too bad for the latter!

And, Hillary wouldn't be where she is today without a sizable cohort of men voting for her.
BUT, there is a rear-guard, entrenched swathe of white men who view her as the detestable and disquieting symbol of their disappearing white privilege.

(1,825 posts)...for a particular country (the U.S.) as if this is such a big deal, easily outweighing such considerations as tremendous deceit, insincerity, incompetence, belligerence, fracking, etc. But there definitely have been a number of female democratically-elected leaders in our world, such as Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Golda Meir, Angela Merkel, Dilma Rousseff, Erna Solberg, etc, so worldwide it is not unprecedented.
I know that when I vote for someone for a political office, the person's gender matters not at all to me. I want to vote for a candidate who will fight to break up the too-big-to-fail banks, not one being paid off by them.

(30,481 posts)Though I have seen many claim things like "obsessed", which is nothing more than deflection and a shot at emotional stability, when I discuss her gender.
You are correct that it isn't unprecedented worldwide, though we are still no where even close to equal representation across the globe. In fact, we are extremely oppressed worldwide.
"the person's gender matters not at all to me"
That explains a lot. I never understood the "I don't see color or gender" crowd. I truly find the thought process to be foolish.

(1,825 posts)the "I don't see color or gender" crowd, regarding them as foolish, you might have some difficulty understanding this guy:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

(30,481 posts)You aren't even close. I'm a bit shocked at how far off you are while trying to proclaim his words as something that directs you. The thoughts you are holding and the quote you have brought here from MLK don't even come close to saying the same thing. So sad to see him used by you in this manner. Very sad.

(1,825 posts)"the content of their character," a notion completely disregarded by many supporters of Hillary, perhaps even you.
