Related: About this forumSports Analogy: We're in "Garbage Time"
For those not familiar with the concept, "garbage time" is the time in the game where one team is so far ahead, and the time left on the clock is so small, that the game is over for all intents and purposes, because the only way team that's behind can win is if some miracle happens.
What happens in garbage time? Normally the winning team takes their foot off the gas (it's actually sometimes considered in bad taste not to do so). They don't try as hard. In basketball, they take their starters out so they can get some extra rest, and put in the players that don't play much in important games. In football, on offense you call running plays that take a lot of time off the clock, and on defense you go into a "prevent" defense, you play a loose style of defense that gives away short yardage plays, but makes it very difficult to get the big plays they need for their miracle comeback.
In garbage time, some of they losing teams stats might be inflated. The Quarterback might have thrown for 300 yards, but if half of those came during garbage time, nobody thinks he had a great game, because he wasn't getting it done when it counted.
That's the phase of the campaign we're in right now. Bernie is still doing ok, but not good enough to win. If Hillary was completely focused on him, he would likely be doing worse than he is right now. But she's not, she's fighting a two-front war. Bernie is celebrating how well he is doing against prevent defense, but he's not doing anything that's going to win him the game, he's just padding his meaningless stats. At the end of the game, he can brag about how much he won, but much of that will have been during garbage time. When the game was in doubt, he couldn't get it done.

(22,665 posts)Perhaps, but he's invigorated a lot of people to care about politics that would have or have never been involved in politics before. That's especially true of the younger voter block, which hasn't been involved or even remotely interested in politics until now.
I wouldn't paint that as not getting it done. These people have invested their passion behind Bernie, much as others of us have invested in other campaigns. Whether our candidate wins or not, only means we'll try harder the next time if they didn't. And getting more people registered as Democrats has been a huge shot in the arm for liberal ideals.
The job in unifying the party and keeping everyone involved under our big tent, could mean that the people Bernie brought into the political process could help sweep this disgusting GOP scourge out of congress. And that would be a huge win for both democratic campaigns and us all. Bernie may return to a senate where he's now part of the majority and with his notoriety & popularity, he'll be able to bring his Bills to the floor and help Hillary further other democratic & liberal policies. All thanks to a Bernie Sanders campaign, as you say, that couldn't get it done.
