2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAndrea Mitchel: The A.P. is the "gold standard" when it comes to tallying the delegates.
Earlier, in an email message on Sunday, the A.P.'s U.S. Political editor David Scott, said the wire service chooses its words very carefully.
"A.P. uses the term 'presumptive nominee' when it becomes clear a candidate for president will be formally nominated at their party's summer convention," he said.
Ignoring the delegate totals including the intents of super delegates would mean the networks and other news outlets would be ignoring the most important facts of the entire Democratic primary process.
By using the word "presumptive" when talking about Clinton, and by including caveats about the inclusion of super delegates in her total, journalists are leaving the door wedged open, albeit slightly, for a change between Tuesday night and the convention in July.

The A.P. would never risk their credibility by altering their procedures to help or hinder a particular candidate. That would simply be absurd.

(6,399 posts)So that's no great shakes. We saw how poorly they were handled in NY for what was done there. I've been voting for nearly thirty years and have never been involved in exit polling. But I find polling in general to not be what it was decades ago in general as well.

(24,689 posts)Sit on vital information they already have? No news organization would do that.
Renew Deal
(81,855 posts)It is not vital information. It's not a tornado warning or a gunman on the loose. They do it with exit polls, military action, and gossip. This is no different than the exit poll scenario.

(24,689 posts)This is the biggest news event in years.. no way would they or any other news org sit on it.

(62,269 posts)So she could "coast into the nomination without a controversy"?

(81,855 posts)I understand if she hit the number in April or May. Then it would be news. But less than 12 hours before polls open? It only hurts the Democratic Party and the country in general.

(62,269 posts)They had to report that, even if it was just past the barrier for entry. You know they had the conversation. They may have even called back the last slew of people and did a double confirmation before they decided to report it. That all the news orgs then followed suite indicates that the last holdouts (Warren? Pelosi?) cracked.

(24,689 posts)But its the reality of the situation... they have been believing a "pipe dream" Bernie has been pushing for months. Its over.. its been over.. its just now that the numbers are clear.

(7,299 posts)a whole year. We would want the time to unwind if we were in their shoes. Eight short years ago, we were in their shoes. We should respect the difficult situation for what it is.

(45,851 posts)You ever notice that the actual Gold Standard is universally mocked as being naive and foolish and yet the phrase is still the Gold Standard of phrases about good stuff?
