Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

"Giving the 600,000 residents of the District of Columbia their fair representation in Congress is long overdue. It is why I applaud the House of Representatives for finally passing the DC Voting Rights Act today. Our nation was born out of a struggle against taxation without representation. And yet, even as we endeavor to promote democracy around the world, it is shameful that we deny our own American citizens who live in the District the right to voting representation in Congress. This injustice tarnishes our democracy as a whole. The right to be represented in the national legislature is fundamental to our core American values. I hope the Senate will act swiftly to pass the DC Voting Rights Act and that the President will not delay in signing this long overdue legislation into law." –Then Senator Clinton’s Statement about the 2007 DC Voting Rights Act (2007)

In 2015, when asked about her support of DC by Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Clinton told her, “I have always been with you, Eleanor. Of course I support D.C. statehood.”

Sanders first mentioned it in 2015

The District of Columbia Fair and Equal House Voting Rights Act of 2007 (H.R. 328) was the first to propose granting the District of Columbia voting representation in the House of Representatives while also temporarily adding an extra seat to Republican-leaning Utah to increase the membership of the House by two. The addition of an extra seat for Utah was meant to entice conservative lawmakers into voting for the bill by balancing the addition of a likely-Democratic representative from the District. The bill still did not make it out of committee.

Black folks in D.C. can't vote? I guess the mayor, city council and president appoint themselves?? As for congress, it's no secret and everyone knows what they're giving up when moving to the District, and believe me, nobody is holding a gun to their heads, preventing them from moving a few miles across the border...

Instead of statehood, the most logical solution would be to return them to Maryland, but Annapolis has repeatedly said they want no part of that headache...

Hillary Clinton backed the push to grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and lambasted “right-wing ideologues in Congress” for meddling in its affairs in a new op-ed written just a month before the district’s Democratic primary.

The Democratic front-runner promised to be a “vocal champion for D.C. statehood” in a Wednesday piece published in The Washington Informer, an African-American newspaper that serves the metro area.

“Lacking representatives with voting power, the District of Columbia is often neglected when it comes to federal appropriations,” she wrote.

“Washingtonians are Americans, too, and it’s time they had a say in their own status.”

Hiroo Onoda is awesome because he's also completely fucking insane. This guy fought World War II for 30 fucking years, which is a claim that not even some of the most hardcore fucking WWII re-enactors can make. He survived in the jungle for three decades with no supplies, no reinforcements, and no official orders, he refused to give up even when pretty much everybody from the Emperor to his own mother were telling him to come home, and he basically represents the physical embodiment of the mantra "refuse to lose". As far as I'm concerned, that's pretty badass.
