2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI will always be a *Bernie supporter, but Donald Trump is my enemy.
There's no need to demonize tRump. He does it himself and other people, like Ken Burns, critique him far better than I ever could.
Hillary Clinton or Donald tRump. That's what it comes down to for me.
Others certainly have the right to disagree that he poses such a great threat that he must be defeated. I don't and won't disrespect that choice, but I sure as hell will disagree.
He's a fucking insane little fascist. And he's dangerous as hell.
*Of course I'll always be a Bernie supporter. He's my Senator.
The last verse of Stephen Vincent Benet's "Litany for Dictatorships"- which has been on my mind a lot lately.
We thought we were done with these things but we were wrong.
We thought, because we had power, we had wisdom.
We thought the long train would run to the end of Time.
We thought the light would increase.
Now the long train stands derailed and the bandits loot it.
Now the boar and the asp have power in our time.
Now the night rolls back on the West and the night is solid.
Our fathers and ourselves sowed dragon's teeth.
Our children know and suffer the armed men.

(45,851 posts)More specifically the owners of the media, Donald Trump wouldn't have been on 24/7 for the last year without their specifically agreeing to it. These people aren't stupid, they know exactly what they are doing.
People have been carefully trained not to see the puppeteer manipulating the show. Trump could have been stopped dead cold by the media any time they wanted to stop pointing their cameras at him.
Newton Minow declared TV a "Vast Wasteland" in 1961, it hasn't gotten better in the meantime.

(68,455 posts)I was at a vigil last night for Orlando. Are we going to elect a guy who will no doubt re-criminalize homosexuality with his court picks? God knows what a guy like Trump is capable of doing to anyone he dislikes with presidential power. He is a despot in the making.

(68,455 posts)I think he was created by the right-wing merchants of hate like Limbaugh and Hannity myself. He was given way too much attention by the media for sure... But any discussion of Trump should include the fact that this evil man must be defeated.

(45,851 posts)They do what the bosses want or their contracts don't get renewed. They seem wealthy to you and I but to the true wealth they are ephemera to be funded or not out of walking around money.
Ask Phil Donahue.

(114,904 posts)I don't watch tv. And yes, the MSM could have taken down tRump, but here he is, nominee of the repuke party. He is who must be defeated.

(45,851 posts)I'm convinced that the vast majority of television programming damages the capacity to think critically, probably not deliberately but just through appealing to the lowest possible common denominator.

(45,851 posts)It's informed a fair bit of my thinking since then. The people I know who watch the most television seem to be the least capable of problem solving in the real world.
Put it together with Frank Zappa's take on TV and the picture is grim.

(45,851 posts)It's time to go after the secondary threat, the back-fire you might say.
Notice that one threat came about because of the media and the other came about despite the media..
