(Chicago) Democrat Hillary Clinton has opened a wide lead over Republican Donald Trump in the presidential contest for Illinois in the general election, a new poll says.
A June 7 statewide poll commissioned by The Illinois Observer for subscribers to its e-newsletter, The Insider, of 732 likely 2016 voters finds that Clinton, an Illinois native of Park Ridge, leads Trump by 19-points, 48.3%-29.5%. Libertarian Gary Johnson, the ex-GOP governor of New Mexico, has 6.1%. 16.0% are undecided.
As a solidly blue state in presidential elections, Illinois is not expected by politicos to be in play in November, but the candidates at the top of tickets could likely influence the outcome of key congressional and state legislative races.
Trump is more problematic for the Illinois GOP than Clinton is for Illinois Democrats.
According to the automated survey, Trump has a 64.4% unfavorable rating with likely 2016 voters and just a 25.5% favorable one. 9.8% are undecided about the ex-Reality TV star.
